I am seriously thinking about an RX8

Post by MT11 »

Hello all!

TL;DR:
Hello, looking for rx8.

New to the forum(well, I have been creeping for a month) and I am at the point of seriously wanting an rx8.
I have read the FAQ, the buyers guides and I think have it mostly sorted in my head as to the questions to ask and what to look out for.

Have been a Mazda fan for a while, almost had a 3 as my first car but went for a disAstra instead. Had a 6 estate sport for 3.5y before leaving to work and travel abroad (aus/nz) and loved it.

I thought I had found a reasonable car, recent rebuild by RR, has D585 and a new cat but alas that elusive compression test was nowhere to be seen and the owner not wanting to spend money to get one. I suggested I pay and test drive it to mazda (8 miles away) for the test but the radio silence I have had since then I think says all it needs to.

Ideal would be the 230 in red with the red/black interior, but I do like the electric blue, and all black aswell. I have been looking in the budget region of 1-2k but potential to up that.

Michael

If the rebuilt car is in warranty, surely the compression doesn't matter? Even if it's on 30psi all round and has a month left... hey, new engine, right?

Ah that's a bugger then, shame.

There have been a lot of compression testers bought by club members recently, I'm sure getting a comp test organised on any car you find wouldn't be much of a problem.
Just be aware that even though good maintenance does make a difference, it seems apparent that it only slows the inevitable, so pretty much anything over 80k won't be great compression wise.

Good to know, thanks!
The one I saw is at 76k but had a rebuild at 62k. I know it's not long since in mileage but that he has stopped replying after I suggest a pre-purchase compression test i feel is bad news

Yeah that's a shame - hopefully in the minority though.

For the right price, I'd probably still consider it. I have more faith in a 14k revs engine than an 80k Mazda one!

I do have a few customers with cars they're selling, 2 I've comp tested recently, one I wouldn't recommend, the other might be what you're looking for.
