I'm way too addicted to the RX8 but...

Post by Lite5h4dow » Sun Aug 12, 2018 3:08 pm

Ok, so I love the RX8. I have done since I first got in one in 2005 when I was 8. I'm 21 now and hopefully will soon pass my driving exam. I don't want to buy another car before I buy an RX8 (especially since you can get one for around £1.5 - £2k) I know the car requires maintenance and care, but I want to know how to best improve its fuel efficiency and while I'm at it fix any other issues that are common with the RX8 (like oil quantity and the like)?

You can't or wont improve fuel efficiency.. and what do you mean by oil quantity, it is a sports car and like all sports cars it will use oil, horror stories are just that, it uses less than a mini cooper S for starters.. get doing the normal reading and familiarise yourself.. start with this topic .. app.php/buyers-guide

:whathesaid: regarding fuel economy. The RX8 is not an economical car, full stop.

As John also said, start studying the Buyer's Guide, then work your way through these FAQ's to arm yourself with the essential knowledge ;)

If and when you start looking at cars, enquire if there is evidence of a recent compression test, and if not ask the seller if they would be willing to have one carried out..

Bearing in mind your age,you may want to arm yourself with a few insurance quotes beforehand - the RX8 is a group 29-32 sports car,and as a first car in the hands of a young new driver you can expect a hefty premium!

Good luck with your driving test :thumleft:

Check out insurance because depending on where you live at your age & being a new driver you could be looking at £1500 to £2000 and that is if you can get a quote.

Hi and :welcome: Lite5h4dow. :D What they^^^ all said  - on insurance if you can add a parent (ideally your Mum) on your policy as a named driver it will often bring the price down for some inexplicable reason.

Add your location into your profile, we may be able to recommend specialists nearby for compression tests, servicing etc and there may even be a local monthly meet where you can come and ask questions in person. :blahblah:

Insurance policy loading seems to have no rhyme of reasoning so it's worth at least getting a quote on an RX8.
When I was young I was paying well over a grand per year for a Rover 200 1.4 (had an mg zr body kit) which had 101bhp then I got a Saab 9000 aero and the insurance halved!
Running a 18T Mitsu TD04 turbo it put down over 350bhp which for the time would give many performance cars a good seeing to [-X

Shop around for the insurance, I tried Adrian Flux being a supposed specialist and got quotes back for 2k upwards (I am 39 years old with 4 years NCD!!!) lets just say I was not impressed.

Got mine with AXA for 860 via Compare the market.. don’t always fall into the trap of using the so called Specialist insurance agents.. as I’ve proved not always the route to go down.

Only way to improve fuel economy is to tow it.
