I just picked up and drove my new to me 2009 r3 last night back home. Didn't skip a beat which is nice, started cold and hot no problems.
Now there's a number of things that need to be fixed on this particular r3, mostly cosmetic, but i do have a strong oil like smell comiing into the cabin while driving, gearbox oil does have a slight leak which i'll be looking into as soon as possible, might be why there's that smell who knows?
Anyway, MOT'd, TAX'd and running fine 1/2 hour drive back home stopped for fuel and still started without any hassle.
This r3 was a CAT damage car but from inspection i couldn't see anything, and well i took a risk.
Hoping to learn lots from the collective here and hopefully keep this r3 running for years to come!
So Hi from a new rx8 owner.
Previous car was a 2007 350z HR(i know)
New and so much to learn!

Re: New and so much to learn!
the oil smell into the cabin will very likely be the rubber boot under the gear lever is torn
as yes the gearbox should be oil tight too, most likely is the output shaft seal needs replacement, which is a bit of a fag on these as you have to drop the exhaust, remove the PPF beam to then remove the propshaft
mark up the PPF bolts before removal to save time on setting it correctly
I'd also say to replace the gearbox oil with redline MTLV the thin 70W75 stuff

Re: New and so much to learn!
Oil smell/Fuel smell in the cabin is as pointed out a tear/rip in the shifter rubber boot, yet to actually sort this out as i need to get the replacement part.
Transmission oil leak i think actually might've been 1 of 3 or all 3 things, output seal(didn't seem to be here but i changed it anyway), reverse switch being loose, transmission bell housing bolts from top(shifter area) being super loose I could hand twist these.
All of those were sorted out and tighten while i had access to them during the output shaft seal replacement.
The top bell housing bolts i tighten from inside the car by removing the shift lever componet.
I have never done anything to a car besides a tyre change, windscreen crack resin fix, topping up fluids.
While a PITA with the PPF, everything else was pretty smooth going, a sign of hope for those that have never worked on cars before!
