Mazda Compression Tester Advice Needed

Post by paul.donaldson »

Hello,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to be asking this.
My son started an RX8 engine rebuild a few years ago but never completed the project. He bought a compression tester (photo attached) to test the rebuilt engine, but never got a chance to use it. It has just been sitting in the shed ever since. He said to me that it was not complete - that there was another part required. I have attached a photo in the hope that someone can tell me if it is indeed incomplete and whether it has any value as is?
Many Thanks in advance,
Paul

Mod Bit: Moved here as first post.

As a Guest on the forum you can't attach an image, since that privilege is restricted to OC Members.
However, you can link to an image that's hosted elsewhere, including Googledrive and imgur, as long as you first make sure they are shared, and you insert the correct URL.

As a Guest you are also not allowed to post Adverts, which includes "What's it worth?" type posts - and your post is close to heading in the direction.

I'm not sure, from reading your post if it's the engine or the compression tester that may be incomplete, at least without the photo.

However, a compression test of a cold engine is almost meaningless, even with the correct rotary compression tester, and a newly rebuilt engine, that hasn't run could produce results that are scary low, just because it's not bedded-in.

Thank you, Dave. The image of the compression tester is on imgur. This is the link [/color]Image. And to clarify, my question was whether the compression tester is incomplete. I think it is as there is an input socket on the top of the device, which I assume is to supply the power, but I don't have anything to plug into it.
I just wasn't sure whether there it's worth my while tracking down the missing part.
Thank you,
Paul

The power is supplied by clipping those leads on a 12V battery.

What's not in the photo is the sensor cable that screws into the spark plug socket to measure the compression.

All I can see is the display unit.

Thank you for that. Much appreciated. I think qwakers believes that the sensors cannot be sourced. I wouldn't know where to begin to even try to source them, but perhaps someone here could tell me what to search for and any websites that I might try (I'm guessing eBay :) ) ?
Many Thanks,
Paul

Hi @thatturborx8. Could I ask how much you would charge to make the sensor?
Many Thanks,
Paul
