Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
Hi, I have an RX8 with the SatNav housing (but no CD which I understand to be useless anyway), and am looking for a nexus or similar replacement.
Does anyone have one to sell, or does any one do that? I am in London.
Thanks,
John

The Nexus seven is a good fit but very old now. There is a guide on the forum but may be in the members only area.

Re: Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
I had the Nexus mounted in the satnav replacing the OEM screen for a few years, ideally you'd want to trim the lower part of the satnav bezel as well by a few mm otherwise it's hard to use the navigation buttons on the Nexus as it's slightly larger than the OEM display.
Mirroring the thoughts above, the latest Nexus 7 is over 11 years old now for the latest version which had 2GB of RAM and 16/32GB of storage, the Nexus 7 V1 only had 1GB RAM and 8/16GB of storage so unless you use it as a dumb terminal with a Android Auto/ Apple Carplay then it won't be capable of running todays apps very well.
Ended up replacing mine as the last supported android version was either 5 or 6 and we are now on 14 so was very out of date and a security risk.
Had a look at a few 7" replacements but couldn't find anything decent in that size so went to 9" instead which just about fits within the available space and used neodymium magnets under the satnav housing to hold it on.

Re: Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
The Amazon Fire 7" tablets fit but these are very low spec and I wouldn't necessarily recommend them. They also don't have a GPS antenna built in so you'd end up needing to tether everything from a smartphone to use it for Nav as well as music. Ultimately, it works but it's far from a perfect solution.
Check out the thread about the Raspberry Pi install Plank did as that's probably one of the better solutions out there, if you're comfortable with the work entailed. I would link it but I think it's in the member only section.

Re: Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
Thanks all, unfortunately I don't have the time (and probably not the skills either!) to do this myself, so was looking for a 'drop in' option. I'm assuming that there must be some 2nd had sets available? Not that I can find one..

Re: Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
Does that mean that it is removable? And if so (it seems like a nice simple option, apart from charging etc, and perhaps audio connection), what mods did you need to make? The space when the 'lid' is closed is too slim to fit anything in... Do you just open, then connect?untakenname wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 8:08 pmwent to 9" instead which just about fits within the available space and used neodymium magnets under the satnav housing to hold it on.

Re: Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
Hi, I stuck a couple of phone magnet stickers onto the back of the tablet and under the satnav housing in the car (between the housing and old Nexus screen that's still in situ) there's two large (1x20x60mm afaik) neodymium magnets, it holds it well with a lot of force as I have to slide it away rather than pull it to remove.
Can use the tablet as a standalone but usually use it connected via a right angle USB-C cable routed through the dash which is connected to an OTG USB hub in the glovebox which provides the power plus connects the Android Auto/Apple Carplay dongle, soundcard and rear view camera.

Re: Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
Ah yes, similar to the ones for my phone :-) What are the details of the other end of the USB C? I'm not fussed about the cameras, just audio (using the wheel controls) and Navigation. I assume power is split from e.g. the cigarette lighter?untakenname wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2023 12:53 pmHi, I stuck a couple of phone magnet stickers onto the back of the tablet and under the satnav housing in the car (between the housing and old Nexus screen that's still in situ) there's two large (1x20x60mm afaik) neodymium magnets, it holds it well with a lot of force as I have to slide it away rather than pull it to remove.
I t does look like a nice and relatively simple solution.

Re: Hello, looking for a 'nexus' repalcement for the SATNAV
Hi, it's a cheap USB-C OTG adaptor which provides power to the tablet and the usb accessories, have a photo here when I was testing it out showing it connected to phone using dongle for Android Auto / Apple Carplay.
I use a 1 meter USB C extension cable (to right angle connector for the tablet end) and keep all the wires and adaptor tucked behind the glovebox.
I use a 20AH power bank instead of a 12v USB adaptor as it can sometimes switch off otherwise when you don't want it to (at petrol stations etc..) after a few hours of use it's only depleted it around 25%.

Thanks, and what did you use to connect to the car audio? Something from the headphone, or via the OTG...untakenname wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 11:50 amHi, it's a cheap USB-C OTG adaptor which provides power to the tablet and the usb accessories,
