Morning all, newbie here.

Post by UncleAlias » Mon Feb 12, 2018 10:11 am

Hello All, introducing myself as a freshly smitten RX8 owner.

Collected my 2006 Stormy Blue RX8 231 on Saturday - 48k and in pretty fab condition from my inexperienced eye.

Would love your thoughts on first steps to find out how much of an initial money pit I've just bought. Is it better to post my initial bundle of questions separately, or all together, and where? (I've a list coming together about compression test, service, diagnostics, radio, clutch, wheels and tyres, to name but a few)

Keen to come to the AGM, but will I be out of my depth before my first engine rebuild? :)

See you all in a while,

Simon.

Morning Simon, and welcome along. Best bet to begin with is to have a browse of the forum, and use the search tool to see if your questions have been asked before - you'll be surprised at the number of commonly answered questions on here. Looking at your list, there's nothing that hasn't been covered elsewhere, so have a nose round and see what you can dig up :thumleft:
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; cruise control; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray

Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

:welcome: to our forum Simon, and show us some pics of your car, we like pics here :thumleft:

First job .. join the club as a full member, you are restricted to certain topics as a guest and you will want access to all the forum, especially the members area :) .. not forgetting discount from traders etc., that will get you back more than the cost of membership!!
I would hope that you researched the car and the requirements that all new owners need to check, before you parted with any cash .. like this topic .. app.php/buyers-guide ;)

Hi Simon and welcome. May I be the first person to say "ignition system". Any idea what coils your car has on it, or when they were last changed?
48k is theoretically coming into the area where you might want to be looking at new plugs (25k-30k miles a set?) depending on when or if they were last changed.
How much service record / other receipts did you get with the car?
More pictures, more better, and yep, if you're looking to keep the car running well and even do some mods, joining the club will get you various discounts from the recommended specialists on the forum (and some track day companies) which will save you the membership fee and more pretty quickly.

Hi and :welcome: UncleAlias. :D :whathesaid: about your ignition system/coils. As above, have a good read round the forum, especially in the FAQ section, and you will find a lot of your questions probably have answers already. Any that you can't easily find the answers to, just ask either here or in the RX-8 Discussion section.

You don't need to have had a rebuild to come to the AGM (I haven't had my first rebuild yet and I've had the car over 11 years), just join the club, get yourself booked in and post in the AGM thread so we know you're coming (and post your menu choices for the meal on the Saturday), you will be most welcome. :thumleft:

Have a good read through whatever in the FAQ section you didn't already read :study: and then (and just ignore me if you know all this already) here are my best tips for keeping it all running sweetly:

1. To start up turn the key to position 2, wait for most of the lights on the dash to go out (I watch the airbag light by the glove box), press the clutch to the floor (optional, but reduces drag), turn the key to start and do not touch the throttle until it has started. You can drive off straight away, just keep the revs down for a bit (see #4 below).

2. Never [-X turn off the engine before it has reached at least somewhere towards normal operating temperature (should only take a minute or two, but best to go for a short drive if just swapping cars round on the drive etc). Switching off cold risks flooding, which is a real :censored: with a rotary engine. Mazda recommend rev to 4k and hold it for 8-10 seconds switching off while still revving if you have no option but to switch off cold (it is not necessary to do this in any other circumstance).

3. Check the oil level regularly (use the dipstick - the oil gauge tells you nothing other than that you have or don't have pressure) and top up if necessary with semi synthetic 5w30 (more people are advising to use 10w40 now though) ... small amounts at a time, no more than ½ a litre then check the level again before adding more as you don't want to overfill it.

4. Use all the revs once the engine is nice and warm (keep it below about 4k until the needle on the water temperature gauge is pointing straight up, then give it another 10 minutes for the oil to warm up too before really thrashing it  ) and hit the beep often. Best acceleration is from 4k revs up - to pull away you really need to rev to 2k - you can let the revs drop after lifting the clutch if you are in traffic, cruising steadily at 3½k revs and changing down to go up hills or accelerate gets you the best mpg ... which still won't be great. ;)

5. Join the club for discounts on all sorts of things (you will very quickly get the cost of membership back - and then some), loads more info in the members only sections, local meets (or if you can't find one exactly local it is a good excuse for a drive if you come to one a bit further away), a sexy keyring just for joining and more. :thumright:

Also don't forget the possibilities of the Bucks meet (viewtopic.php?f=99&t=44530) which should be this Friday evening, The Oxford meet (viewtopic.php?f=99&t=75737) which should be around Lunch Saturday 3rd March, and the Surrey / SW London meet (viewtopic.php?f=99&t=59273) which should be in the evening of Wednesday 7th March. Generally for food and chat, occasionally there might be a drive involved.

Otherwise see you at the AGM!

Receipt from Racing Beat, September 2017 for Mazda RX8 Ignition kit - Genuine Mazda coils, NGX plugs and Magencor leads - £408. Millage would have been 46k from MOT. So I think I just avoided my first bill :)

Full Mazda service history to 36k , and then a 'receipt' for a service at 40k ish. Cat changed in October last year too - but no idea of the quality.

Happy days ( for today anyways)

Racing Beat is known as Clive around these parts, and is a Trader on here, and a great bloke. So your ignition is properly sorted. You landed on your feet there. Shame you don't have similar provenance for the cat... :(

That’s some luck with the ignition.
