Best exhaust for the R3

Post by TheJDMStereotype » Wed Oct 17, 2018 8:19 am

Hi,

I ordered a Racing Beat REV8 exhaust from LC Rotary about 4 weeks ago but apparently it has been delayed significantly (2 weeks or more). They kindly offered us the Petit Racing exhaust but now I’m not sure which one is best. Any ideas which one I should go for?

Thanks

I have the Milltek on mine as do a few others and it's great. Lovely throaty sound off it and doesn't drone on the motorway when doing a long journey, looks the absolute dogs danglies too with lush 4" tips that perfectly fit the housings 8)

They both have their own qualities, I would not say one is better than the other.

I have the Pettit on my my R3 with the Pettit Sports Cat, as Kopite says it sounds great with a nice bassy tone and does not drone. It is fairly loud with the Sports cat but not antisocially loud (with a normal cat it is obviously quieter).

I have a Racing Beat on an S1 I bought with some friends and what I like about that system is that whilst it is quieter, it feels like it was designed solely with the RX-8 in mind because it has a coarser, metallic sort of noise that accentuates the noise from the engine.

ETA - I see you are in Surrey so if you wanted to meet me at my friends in Chertsey to hear them you are more than welcome.

Thanks guys appreciate the advice and offer to hear them :D
So I’ll go for the Petit Racing one then. Unfortunately I can’t have a matching sports cat as I have a Japspeed one.
Thanks again for all the advice 😁

I prefer the fitment of the Pettit catback as I've fitted to mine with a RB dual resonated decat

I have heard whisper of both of them (lol, whisper), and have to say that I much prefer the Pettit/ Milltek system.

The styling on the R3 with the slash cut tips is a touch nicer than on the S1 IMO, and the RB sticks out like OEM.

Sound wise is where the main decider should be. The Rev8 is nice and quiet with a decent tone, but quite subdued IMO. The Pettit is a fair chunk louder (not in a bad way, far from it), with a nice deeper tone.

My car has the Pettit on it, and will stay that way.

We used to enjoy "tunnel runs" around London, some of which are a few miles long.

These are the only "tunnels" we're found in NI, which don't really cut it #-o

I have the Pettit/Milltek catback and cat. It compliments the engine really well. It enhances the sound as well as making it louder. I love the burble on the overrun and the pops on the upshift. It can be calm and sedate when driven normally and as soon as you want to have some fun it turns itself up to 11!

The Pettit/Milltek for tail pipe looks and sound, not so for build quality, crappy welds, crappy slot joints, low grade stainless, arrives dented from factory and rusty joints as standard.

My brand-new one was pretty much near same condition after hours of re-finishing an old second hand unit.

Racing Beat for build quality, high level finished product that will last, less of a tone though.

Zoom in, see rusty parts and crappy packaged hence the dents.

Then see how crappy the welding is and so called free flowing silencers! Ie, crap smaller dia baffles clearly seen here.

Can't agree with you on the Milltek. My car is up in the air on a pretty regular basis and it's still like new. Nothing like what you've described, still in perfect condition or as near as for something that's over three years old now. Maybe you just got a ' Monday morning' jobbie...
