Stop it!

Post by Humane-Hobgoblin » Sun Jan 21, 2018 9:24 am

Hi all, just wondering what the options are for aftermarket brake discs and pads? I’m not looking for racing spec stuff as I don’t plan on track daying my 8, but I am interested in some better brakes.

Cheers!

It's always going to be a personal opinion however there's plenty of input so far and it's also nice when people have actually used what they're recommending. (this is why I only suggest or not suggest what I have used) I've had the Brake Depot as mentioned above I got the 40 grove and tbh they where very good especially for the money, I used them with ebc red stuff pads on the road they where noticeably better then what came on the car and worked very well, however while on track I found they over heated pretty quickly. I think my driving style and the fact that red stuff aren't actually for track was the main problem. If I didn't go on track then I would use them again as the dust off them is very low. I now run a BBK (k-sport 8 pots) now with yellow stuff pads it's excellent now and overheating is never an issue now. On my lady's 8 I fitted the ebc grooved (black) disks and yellow stuff pads they're very good on road and track and are an excellent option on a reasonable budget and what I would probably suggest for most.

The standard brake discs and pads are very good Dan and only really warrant changing if you planning on taking your car on the Track or you going to start Hill Climbing, Autosoles etc again :!:

For instance I run the standard WRX/GT86/BRZ Brake Discs on my car because they are so good, so why upgrade to something else :!:

The Pads I use are EBC Yellow Stuff all round to give me better stopping power plus they don't squeal unlike the WRX/GT86/BRZ pads :(

We can have a chat about this stuff on 25th February if you like Dan :thumleft:

do the yellow stuff work OK on the road or would green stuff be better?

As I've used green stuff quite a lot on my other cars with mixed success
usually good and certainly value for money
don't stop like DS2500's but they are about 1/4 of the price

If Dan is just doing Road Use then either stick with the Standard Pads or fit something else like EBC Green Stuff etc......

Ahh that’s fair enough then! The discs that are on the car aren’t actually that bad, but neither are the pads, there is a slight squeal every now and again, just keeping my options open

I should have some grooved and drilled/dimpled disc's here if that helps. I also have a red front splitter tho it is attached to my track car. I would probs sell it if you wanted it. Can also fit it when you come up :)

The most important thing is to keep the brakes in good order.

Because the oem brakes are so good it's easy to loose 60% (or more) of the brake power and not notice in normal road driving.

The most common issue is for the calipers to seize on the slide pins so, rather than the disc being clamped evenly from both sides, the braking is just from the pad being pushed against one side of the disc. This then wears one pad and not the other, giving a false impression of the amount of wear remaining, and it also can damage the disc.

It's even possible to pass the mot with this condition as the brakes are so much larger than your average shopping trolley.

The brake fluid should also be replaced every 2-3 years.

Hit the brake pedal hard on a clear road at 70 mph.
If the brakes can trigger the abs then you don't need upgraded brakes, though you might need better tyres....

Pete; Maybe I’ll get that airdamn if you’re selling it!

Nigel; I can’t do the AGM this year unfortunately!

Warpcoil; The brakes are pretty damn good at the moment, just doing research at the moment, though I’ll try the brake test out maybe tomorrow on the way to work!

I'm running Black Diamond drilled & grooved front discs, standard rears, braided lines and CL (Carbone Lorraine) sintered pads all round..

The car brakes like nobody's business, but the downsides are the brake squeal at lowish speeds and horrendous black brake dust - I'm forever cleaning the wheels

Oh..and the price might be a factor :-k

A thin wipe of CeraTec on the back of the pads, end clips and slide pins, should stop that squeal

I decided to upgrade my brakes, mainly for aesthetics but they were getting old and I wasn't sure it was stopping as well as it had done in previous years. I went for Black Diamond drilled and grooved disks all round, Racing Beat braided lines and Hawk pads a couple of years ago - I'm still very happy with my choices.
