'best' is too broad and all encompassing to answer straight off of the bat but these are handy and probably what you're looking for.
Cheap, connect to your phone wirelessly, no batteries required etc.

Dito I have a usb one to that does a few others bits but for code and live data reading these are great
If its not broke I'm sure I can find a reason to take it apart :thumright:

I have a not very cheap one that connects to my garmin satnav that works well, also it has extra guages to display various engine parameters, and have android app so can use it on my phone or tablet
Led side lights, purple Led interior & puddle lights, pz grills, Ryan rotary performance coils, sump, engine mounts & sohn, HME engine rebuild at 50k, RRP exhaust & high flow cat, racing beat revi intake including scoop, quick shifter, alloy filler cap, pz alloys, suspension, mazdaspeed spoiler, japspeed toe arms & hardrace camber arms, RRP custom remap

I use the apps OBD Fusion and Dash Command on my iPhone, iPad and Asus tablet. For Android you need a Bluetooth Adaptor (reader) and for iPhone it needs to be wireless.
You can read the error codes and clear them and display all sorts of data from the cars ECU too as you drive.

I find it useful to also have a standalone reader you can keep under the passenger seat/wherever and not rely on connecting to a phone. There are loads available for under £20, check the reviews and take your pick :)
