K Sport RX8 BBK Front and Rear

Post by mzivtins » Tue Feb 23, 2016 2:35 pm

So after months of searching, reading reviews and personal tastes, i decided to take the plunge and buy the K Sport BBK for the front and rear for my RX8 build, the rears are really cool because they come with a hand-brake kit which is a very nice touch.

For personal tastes i couldn't leave the rears as standard, for me the brake kit is as much about looks as performance.

A few quick things i found:

The size guides are totally wrong IMO for all break kits, it is said that the 256mm kit is for 18inch wheels, in my opinion this is mad! 356 for 19's and 20's i would say is perfect, the discs are MONSTERS.
The K Sport logo has changed. In my opinion this is for the better, it is now a stuck on kevlar/weave logo which is really nice and so easy to change if you dont like the logo.
You can have the calipers painted in a custom colour for not much money at all.

I went for the standard slotted discs in non-floating (floating discs cost a huge amount more from K Sport)

On the fronts i went for the 8 pot calipers, 8 pots isnt what you think it is, the pots are smaller, although the brakes are pretty damn huge, and mega hardon material tbh I LOVE THEM!!

The finishing touches on the nuts and bolts that are visible are amazing, a real attention to detail:

Pad spring:

_MG_4315.jpg (183.94 KiB) Viewed 1832 times
The rear caliper, although the discs are the same 356mm, are smaller, which is a more natural look IMO:

The rear caliper handbrake kit (not shown here) works by compressing the black 'feet' against the pads then discs, very cool solution:

Now the biggest issue is, ever seeing them get dirty

Thanks Rod, i just went for the standard red, as far as BBK's are concerned these are by far the cheapest, so a real option if anyone is looking :)

Very nice. :)

Good to see that a manufacturer is making a kit with the proper accommodation for a functional cable handbrake now.

What're the seals/boots like on the pistons? As far as I recall, K-Sport's previous stuff didn't have proper dust boots, so weren't a practical prospect for daily all-weather street use.

They do have a secondary seal, which i guess is just a fancy way of saying dust seal

on close inspection it looks like the kits have everything covered, now all that is left is to see how Ben finds them to fit, he has done K Sports before and rates them so should be an easy life :)

I run the 6 Pots on my motorbike without the dust seal, its a lot different obv, but in the case of the bike, dust seals cause a huge issue and poor feel, i've never known issues so far, but you know its better to have a easy problem that doesnt lock your front wheel up

I got mine through Ksport.co.uk which is Apex Performance, they really know their stuff, advised me on the best pads to suit what i need too!

So the front kit is around £980, shipping was £150 (as i wanted it a lot faster) and pads were expensive too (by choice) at £120 for the fronts.
Front price all in: £1,250.18

The rears... i forgot to order brake pads   nothing that cant be sorted within a day though! The handbrake solution means these are more expensive at: £1,537.40

Due to my own invoicing i had to purchase both kits separately, the fronts i bought on the 12/01/2016 and the rears on the 20/01/2016
The quoted time from K Sport was 2-5 weeks, they arrived today both together which is really cool and just dead on 5 weeks :)

Damn they look nice and i think a very reasonable price for the fronts!

I agree with you on the not wanting to leave the rears standard but damn they had to more expensive then fronts didnt they

If it's any consolation, Clive recommends you leave the rears as stock, they're plenty powerful and he reckons they're still even a touch too powerful even with a BBK on the front, so if you're going for performance there's absolutely no need to change the rears, in fact you're better off leaving them as they are.

It's for looks as much as purpose tbh, the rear calipers are smaller so the braking balance is maintained, I also like the idea that the brake fade between the front and the rear should be very close. I want to keep the balance of the car very neutral as I love how that feels on the rx8, man I miss my car :( hahaha

If you want to keep brake fade in check then IMO that's only a serious issue on track, where you're better off looking at brake cooling.

On a lighter note, fitting a BBK front and rear reminds me of the old joke about Ladas: How do you double the value of a Lada? . . . . Put fuel in it.

Anyone else using these and got any feed back? Build quality looks excellent, found some good reviews here and there but not from anyone really on the track use so to speak.

I can't speak for the K Sports, but I'm running maserati 8 pots up front (might be 6 pots, not 100% sure at the moment) and the braking force is phenomenal. More than that, though, is the pedal control and feel. I found them to be a hell of a lot better at modulating my input than before. Perhaps it's placebo, but they do feel better IMO.
Current: FrankenRex 2, leaner and meaner. '60 plate, eibach lowering spings, Maserati 6 pots, braided brake lines

To-do: suspension geometry, alcantara headliner, Ryan Rotary remap, track alloys, custom-built DRLs, Foglight tint

No more: '58 Blue R3, '04 White/ Black 192, '09 Diamond Grey R3, '09 Velocity Red R3

There are plenty of K-Sports in Time Attack, on different cars. I am planning to fit them this year because, although the standard size brakes are great for the standard car, I think the triple will need something a bit better. 8)

Well this is one of the reasons I was looking at this kit is because they do the rear as well.

I was hoping when I was round last week there was time to go out in your R3 to get an idea of the brakes and exhaust note if it wasn't so late.
