Number Plate

Post by chris-rx8 » Mon Mar 23, 2015 9:13 pm

Not sure what to do with my number plate, bought the car at the weekend and the previous owner had the car resprayed and didn't reattach the number plate and just have it on the dash, the front end looks awesome without it but I don't want the risk of being pulled over, should I:

1. Put the standard plate back on someone on the front bumper.
2. Purchase a square import number plate.
3. Buy a stick on number plate.

I'm swaying towards the stick on one at the mo. Here's how my front end looks:

If I remember I will pm you a photo of mine with a stick on below the Mazda badge, literally on its bottom edge.
The alternative position is on the this photo.
The issue is of course that stick on plates are not legal so may result in a tug of MOT fail but if made if the correct reflective material and letter font may not attract too much attention.
A little known fact for standard plates is that they must show the name and postcode of the maker to be legal!

Take the badge off and put the plate where it was, it looks like it has been squeezed in if you try and fit it below.

I don't think it looks squeezed in at all. Could not get a better shot as the car is parked nose in to the fence and flowerbed!

That doesn't look as squeezed as others I've seen, but you have managed to get the badge and plate to overlap slightly where the others didn't. I still prefer where the plate replaces the badge, like mine.

"NCF" - my daughter's initials. Would look good on her Audi TT Quattro (which, incidentally, I hate as i can barely see out the side windows and it tries to eat my head when I get out of it -got the scars to prove it.)

I personally think it would have looked better with the mazda badge removed and the plate higher up. Not keen on how theres more of a gap under the centre of the plate than at the corners.

Each to their own though, and I really do like those grills :thumleft:

I’m not a fan of offset number plates as it spoils the symmetry of the car.

Thats exactly what I am aiming for just my grills are stainless and someones had a go at painting the side grills black and they look very tatty now so will strip and polish them and go stainless, badgeless and I'll be able to see my V on the lower splitter again :)

I asked 2 of my local MoT stations about putting my number plate above the grill as Dove66, and both said it would be an MoT fail as it is not vertical and there is a facility designed to mount the number plate over the grill :(

It’s staying there. I’ve had it there for 6 years and no mot station has ever mentioned it. If they do I’ll fit one to the grill and take it off again afterwards.

I'm pleased you can get away with it....wish I could. Your car looks great as it is :thumleft:

I think cars like the e-type have dispensation as that's how they were designed.

Wondering if I can get a flexible magnetic number plate and glue earth magnets to the inside of the front bumper. Then I can change it easily before the MoT.

Number plates also have to comply with the British Standard BS AU 145d which must be printed on the plate (The EU missed out on that one) which includes the material that the plate is made from.

The way I looked at it was if everything about the plate is legal then I’m less likely to get grief over it. It is reflective, it’s legal size with legal letters and spacing. It has the manufacturers details and postcode and the BS number. It’s more legal than most other plates out there. No mot station has mentioned it at all.

I think you just build the number plate up like in any site. I wanted a border as it was going on a white bonnet, there name and post code is a legal requirement and I’m sure they asked if I wanted the BS number on it.

The two companies that used to do OC discount for number plates are no longer trading.

I wonder if these guys would be interested in filling the void....
