Gear Lever Gaiter

Post by BobJ » Sat Jun 18, 2011 12:51 pm

Thought the original vinyl gear lever gaitor looked a bit rubbish so ended up ordering a leather one from The Tuning Shop http://www.tuning-shop.co.uk . The only problem was that the gaiter was made from four leather panels rather than the three panel oem one where the stiching lines up with the edges of the rotor shaped gear knob.

Call me fussy #-o but I wanted to keep the oem look - just ditch the vinyl. I contacted Greg at The Tuning Shop and he kindly agreed to supply me with the four panel as a temporary measure so that I could send him back my oem vinyl. He's then going to use that as a template to make a leather three panel which will be made available for retail.

I'll let you know how I get on but here's the four panel. The fit wasn't perfect and required a bit of work with a scalpal and scissors but I'm pretty pleased with the result =D>

You need one with red stiching as well.

Too much for me that, i fancy doing mine in blue LEDs inside with a gaiter with blue stitching, maybe a nice heavy plain ally gear knob as well.

I'm still hoping they'll do this knob with the 6-speed pattern.

Well true to his word, Greg at The Tuning Shop has made me a three panel gaiter from the vinyl original that I sent them. He's also fitted the OE plastic ring from the neck of the original. The net result fo this is that the neck of the gaiter is now bulked up to the same width as the base of the gear knob and has helped retain the look of the original.
The fit was spot on. Excellent service =D> =D>

The cost was £9.99. Greg at The Tuning Shop is willing to offer a discount to subscribed forum members. I don't want to step on anybodies toes in terms of setting this up so what's the best way of going about it?

Makes a nice change to see decent customer service these days, nice one mate.

Mine has got a two tone red/black leather gaiter fitted, which is exactly what I'd have bought if it wasn't already on there. Obviously that wouldn't work with 3 panels, but I'm happy with my 4 panel version anyway.

I was going to post a question on fitting one of these and then saw this thread. How is the gaiter fitted ? Does the ring turn or lever off ? How is the gear knob removed ? Sorry to sound so ignorant but I don't want to force anything. Thanks.

The knob unscrews.

The console panel unclips and then the ring is released from underneath.

those with light up nobs will need a gaiter that is able to be removed over the top of the nob, as you cant actully unscrew it first because of the wiring.

With a light-up knob you just release the console panel first, undo the connector and feed the wire up through the small slit before unscrewing the knob.

This means that the new gaiter will need a couple of the stitches removed near the top to run the wire through.

the gaiters in the light up nobs have a fastener on the collar to aid lifting over it

You're right Vinnie, for those that have the full illuminated knob kit with the modified gaiter.

The only two I've seen in the wild, have had the knobs bought second-hand and didn't come with the gaiter.
Hence the process I described.

Sorry for the confusion.

Ordered a 3 panel black leather with red stitching should arrive soon...the service from these guys as been amazing so far and the discount was refunded within 1 day. I got an email saying they had no 3 panel in stock in the UK so being dispatched from Europe and as been custom made will get pics up when it arrives.

EDIT - Attached pic and I really like the subtleness and excellent service from the tuning shop well worth a look if your'e after an upmarket gaiter.

Fitted my new gaiter today, so thought I would post a few pics to describe how easy it is to do (didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for this).

First step is to unscrew the gearknob and then remove the cover holding the gaiter surround. It's held in with six press-fasteners, so just needs to be levered off. When turned over, it looks like this:

Image

Next you need to remove the 4 screws holding the retaining ring, and separate it from the surround to release the old gaiter. The leather has got small slits which need to be carefully released from the tags holding the gaiter in place, as shown here:

Image

Then you simply line up the new gaiter, pass the tags through the slits (you can make your own with a sharp knife or scalpel if required) and put the two halves back together using the 4 screws. When you turn it over, it will look like this:

Image

Then it's simply a case of slipping the gaiter over the gear stick, press the 6 fasteners back in (or, in my case, 5.....) to secure the cover, and screw the knob back on. Here's the finished result:

Image

I got mine from ebay, just under 7 quid from topgaiters, and I'm well pleased with it. Size and fit was exactly the same as the original, even down to the small slits which lined up perfectly.

Anyway, I hope that is helpful

I know this is an old thread; using as I don't want to get into bovva with the admins for not searching. :-)

I have also had an excellent experience from https://www.tuning-shop.co.uk/.

I ordered the three panel with red stitching after I upgraded my gear knob to "burgundy" coloured thread after I made this post:
https://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/v ... 1#p1112421

This is where Tuning Shop stood out; I was very happy but shared some feedback that the stitching was "backwards" as it didn't line up with my red stitched knob (Purile aside: that still sounds painful). They immediately offered to pay for my original old gaiter (that did line up) to be posted to them, and to make me a new one FOC.
It took a couple of days and they even changed the thread for a closer match to my own deep red stitching.

What do we all think?
