Alloy Refurb and Paint Cost?

Post by Ninja_Freak »

Hi folks.

No clue on costs so looking for your experience.

I've got a set of the PZ wheels that have a couple of minor scuffs on them. I've been quoted £500 for refurb and powder coat to gloss black.

It feels a bit expensive to me. What's your experience and thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Thats probably standard for a lot of places now. However, I believe city wheels in birmingham is the go to, at the cost of about 30-50 quid a corner depend on bare rims, rims and tyres or wheels on car.

Why not have a go at painting them yourself its not difficult, minor scuffs can easily be dressed out and finished in black covers up a multitude of sins on a set of alloys and considerably cheaper! :-k

Yeah it's a standard powder coat price now. Wheel worx in llandudno are 470 for 19 inch r3 wheels....a place in Chester had the audacity ti qoute me 700 quid for paint not even powder coat while still on car as a mobile blow over job to drive out and spray on car. I was like no thanks mate. Some people in Chester been ripped off. I wish I could get 700 quid for about 2 hrs work.

It's normal price for local places and 'boutique' shops, very expensive compared to trade focussed places.

City Wheels will do them all for about £200 same day if the rims are bare. Add a few quid if you need tyres fitted. I was last there 9 months ago and they're still ace. All depends on whether the journey is worth it for the saving. If you have multiple sets to have done the savings can be huge.

There was a place in Chichester that was charging just £50 an alloy for a powder coat, but now they’ve hiked their prices to £75. This was only a month ago as well, which is a shame! Makes your quote pretty reasonable now as this seems to be the standard price.

Agreed
near me there's little firm that always used to be £40 per wheel to acid strip and then re-powder coat + a bit if the wheels need to go on the lathe

now £75+
cost of living mate.....

Just be aware of using generic powder coaters, that do garden gates etc, as well as the occasional wheel.

These guys will have their ovens set too high for the wheel alloy and cause the structure to crystallise internally and become very brittle. If you're lucky it might be obvious enough that edges fray when the tyres are refitted, as the alternative is that they fail in use, most often at speed, explosively

There's lots of images and some scary vids of the result online.

Thanks Warpcoil for your thoughts and guidance. It's one of the reasons I try to go local and with businesses that I see first hand and that I can trust.

It is a bit of a minefield sometimes!
