Oil filter relocation

Post by Velocity_Dan93 »

In my quest of being different and making the bay look pretty I've had a thought of relocating the oil filter to where my air pump use to be.
So far can't see anything other than some stuff from the USA forum which I take with a pinch of salt.
Problems so far:
Fire hazard: if it leaks it will be right over the manifold. Easily fixed with a little SS tray around it or something along those lines.
Air lock ?: not sure on this but I read something about but it has to be at the same level as the oem one ? Don't see why though.
Pressure changes: can't see why if it's a sealed system, the amount of oil that will be needed to get it trough some pipes shouldn't be enough to cause a problem right ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm a little lost on this one :/

I can't see any major issue with this.

The best way to avoid an airlock is to keep the runs as level as possible, especially no upward loops.

Also pre-fill the filter with oil and let it stand for a while before fitting, such that the element it totally soaked.
I always do this for peace-of-mind.

Make sure that any connectors used have an adequate bore size, as well as the pipes.

Don't be tempted to switch to a different filter element, unless you're sure that the bypass pressure is the same.

Filter will be the same size for sure thats the one thing that seems clear.
I don't understand the airlock issue as surely when you put a filter on the oem system you have a filter full of air? Plus the oil would drain downwards as it's upright. Is it that there is just an acceptable amount to be allowed or is there some sort of one way valve on the filter housing ? The kits I'm looking at screw onto the oem housing and extend with hoses to and from the new location.

I am relocating mine as I can hardly even see the filter behind the supercharger. Bought the filter mount and adaptors from Merlin Motorsport at Castle Combe and if I can find the receipt I will let you have the details

Just raising this topic from the dead as I'm looking at relocating the oil filter, both for easier filter changes and to fit sensors for oil temperature & pressure.
Most photos I've seen online show it relocated to where the stock airbox used to be, as I'm still using the stock airbox then in place of the air pump looks a good place to put it, and the sensor wiring can go straight through the firewall.
Alternatively there might be room near the washer fluid tank.

Any recommendations on kits/parts that are proven to fit and work are welcome.

That is exactly where I sited my remote filter. I will see if I can find details of exactly which parts I used from Merlin Motorsport.
The pipe I used is Aeroquip push fit which is just the right size to route around the outside of the upper inlet manifold.

Re: Oil filter relocation

I just put together from memory a shopping list of all the parts I bought to do the relocation. Some of the listed parts may not be the correct threads or sizes so this would need checking but the quantity and type of components are correct the prices won’t vary much for matching size items!
I bought the parts in about three bites and never actually added up the total cost which now that I have it looks quite scary.
Dave2112 bought a lower cost set up but had some sealing issues so it may be worth contacting him.
Clearly due to the cost this requires further investigation.

Thanks for that. The Aeroquip hose and fittings look like a good solution, had a quick read about them on an RX7 forum, I guess the remote filter head and take-off plate are the big money items too, there's lots of different variations of orientation of the hose connections though, I'll have to think what would work best.
