When your car got nicked did they unbolt out or cut it off ?

The cat was cut off, but cut off after the flanges at either end, and they carefully unplugged the sensors rather than just ripping the wiring out.

So the Mazda dealer said it appeared to be a steal-to-order job, as the cat and sensors had been taken in a fully reusable state.

Have you had a similar problem?

In order to help combat CAT thefts most legitimate places wont take cut CATs and they have to be complete, so I believe thieves are now cutting beyond the flanges in order to go to the mainstream companies to get the best price.

That what I've been hearing from contacts in the insurance business.

The recent increase in cat thiefs has them rattled and they're talking about introducing specific excesses for cat claims.

I suspect in truth nothing will stop them if they're sufficiently determined, maybe all one can do is make it look as difficult as possible ...

There are various fitted to the mk2s that cab yield upto a £700 payday so i thought id look at the 1 on.my mk2 10ae...its only a £300 cat so not worth the bother to me to change...so after identifying the code bp5z with polishing buffing...i then ground it out so its worthless £90 at best and then painted it red with some ht manifold paint lol...so if the worse happens and it ends up on FB i can identify it.

I did think of trying to make my OEM cat look like it wasn't an OEM cat.

However, I suspect that the only people that would fool would be the MOT testers at the gov'mint testing centres here in NI, who were under instructions to fail any car with a non-OEM or non-Type-Approved cat, even if it passed emissions - and that could lead to a whole world of pain.

I say "were" as the MOT test centres closed six months ago and there's no date announced for them re-opening, at least for non-Taxis and a few other high priority requirements. We just get another year added to our "MOT valid 'til..."

I did think of clamping stainless steel braid around the pipe work either side of the cat because its difficult to cut with a saw it just shreds but again its down to how determined they are to get it.

If parked on flat ground then leaving the car with the handbrake off or on just a couple of clicks may make them think twice as it will move as they try and lift.
The only way to avoid this is to fit a decat but even that won't stop the scum jacking up the car on just the sheet metal by the sills before realising.

It’s a really difficult problem, isn’t it?

That’s why in the end I went for the second alarm.

It’s got proximity sensors, which initially send out a warning ‘blip, Blip’ sound, and a couple of ‘Viper’ lights which flash away like a Christmas tree all the time when it’s parked.

If they ignore that, and try to lift the car the tilt sensor (and / or the proximity sensor) sets off the Mazda alarm plus the Viper alarm which has its own siren, and the Mazda plus Viper sirens together really do make a hell of a racket.

I also get a real-time warning as the Viper alarm fob also beeps like mad and vibrates at the same time.

So hopefully as much deterrent as I can legally pack in, but it’s back to that thing about how determined the s are to steal that specific cat ...

Few months back now, but this nosey parker tripped the external override priority alert sensors by pulling onto my forecourt. Within 42 minutes I had full name, address, D.O.B, and his face book page to which I kindly sent him this with a comment saying "nice car". Can't think why, but I got blocked after he saw it, lol.
