Headlights

Post by brix79 » Tue Oct 13, 2020 6:25 pm

Stumbled upon an interesting thing:

71027192_2346928655342417_5927679159156342784_o.jpg

Now I know the Dr of Franken has had many dabblings with this sort of thing, and may well be able to enlighten ( ), so I thought we could have a thread for headlight things. 8)

OMG John where did you find those?!

I've wanted dark headlights for ages and if they could have pretty lights as well then that's just... goodness they're pretty.

Tbh, I came across it when browsing rx8 things, but the place I downloaded the pic from was here:

I know nothing more! Other than they are mighty fine, though I'm with Ian on the actual lights, I don't care much for the spectrum colours.

I had a thread on headlights somewhere, earlier this year. It's worth watching flyryde on YouTube he modified a set of rx8 headlights (he's a professional at it)

I watched his vid to get mine apart to add the DRL switchbacks and paint the internals. Clearly knows his stuff. The catching the whispy bits was the best tip.

How much do you charge for such magical services Dan? Love the look, although I'd probably need a new set of lenses - mine have lots of what appear to be micro cracks across the top :(

Micro cracks are usually within the structure of the plastic, usually caused by solvents (e.g. wrong cleaning/polishes/screenwash) or local heat, and as such they would normally show up more when the light in on, as the edges illuminate like the ends of fibre optics. There's nothing you can do to fix these, other than replacement.

Surface scratches can also be caused by solvents etc but as they don't penetrate the surface they tend to be less obvious when the light is on. These can be fixed by removing the scratched surface and polishing.

Unfortunately I have not found any new lenses for the R3 lights (or S1 for that matter) so that might be a no go. Hazing can be dealt with easily, cracks not so much.

Splitting down the lights, polishing the externals, spraying gloss black internals, reassembling and then clear coating the lenses is £150 with incl shipping (unless it's going abroad then it may cost a little more).

There's no guarantee the cracks will be improved upon, though, I'm afraid - rather be upfront than promise the earth and under-deliver.

Have you looked into recasting them Dan? I found a few products that would do it while looking at the rear lights.

When I said about "replacement" I was referring to entire light assembly rather than just the front lens.

These used to be super expensive and still are @ £648 a pop for the HIDs (£190 for Halogen) new retail from a dealer, but the number of cars being broken means that used supply exceeds demand and prices are much more reasonable.

I've seen a good(?) pair of HIDs go for £40 on ebay and even less on FB Market.

Not looked in to it at all as yet, mainly because I only really work with the R3 lights and they are usually in fairly good condition. Good enough to put up with.

Just revisiting John's original picture, it's different. Not sure whether I prefer the matte/ satin black over the gloss in mine..

Hmm...

Do you have a pic of your gloss ones Dan? There was a thread with it all in wasn't there. Guess I should actually look for it.. :D

Something like the one above, just for comparison sake. Personally, I think either look damn sweet. 8)

Someone at Mazdafest had a 2012 JDM S2 8 with metallic gunmetal headlight internals that looked really cool. He was pretty sure it came built like that and wasn't aftermarket.

I didn't get to take a photo as I was driving on track, and I've looked on the Irish Rotary forum and FB page and haven't found a pic there either (yet).

Metallic gunmetal is a fine choice for accent bits.

Not that the 8 cans of it I have waiting for my next project bias my opinion....
