Air compressor for tyres - suggestions?
My second Ring 'Heavy Duty' air compressor has failed in less than a couple of months. The first one lasted a year then ate itself, this last one looks to have shipped with a wiring fault and keeps blowing fuses in both my cars. Those kind of portable 12V compressors never seem to last long with me.
I want to buy a new one that's good quality, that I can use both at home and at the track and:
- Fits in the boot
- Self powered - Doesn't need mains power or the car power socket
- Is fast
- Has a metal screw thread valve attachment. Not a clamping plastic one.
- Isn't made by Ring!
This one is my favoured so far, I can buy a metal threaded air line for it. But it's pretty expensive and I'd also need to buy a battery and charger for it:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0846KMGDQ/
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: Air compressor for tyres - suggestions?
I have one of these not quite the spec of the one you were looking at but seems to work well none the less.
Does have plastic clamping attachment unfortunately...
(And I already have the batteries.)
I have also used a Michelin plug in one that did screw on and I made that totally portable by using my jump starter to plug it into.(lithium one) that worked well till my frozen fingers dropped it and the display broke

I have a li-on jump starter pack that I made a cigarette socket lead for.
This works well with the Mazda oem compressor.

Yeah that mazda one is bloody excellent. I think they're starting to last longer than some of the cars.nightfire10 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 5:40 pmQuite a lot of us still using the rx8 one for track and home!
As always this guy gives some pretty solid reviews based on rigorous testing. They might be from Yankee land but as most compressors are made in same factory with a different sticker I'm sure you can find similar.

Re: Air compressor for tyres - suggestions?
So many cars have come without a spare wheel and just an inflater, for at least the last 15 years, that car breakers are coming down with the things, most of which have never been used.
A mate bought a really posh Merc one, in a case compete with still-in-date puncture repair goop, for a fiver.

Yeah who would have an inflator in the car and never use it....

Re: Air compressor for tyres - suggestions?
Thanks for the suggestions. I still lament that my RX8 didn't come with the Mazda tyre inflator. It didn't come with an owners manual either but I managed to get one from bigpete just before the lockdown... only took 3 years to find one!
Just to give a conclusion; I've bought the DeWalt DCC018N inflator below. It features in the Project Farm video that Duncan linked above. It's expensive at £120 for the bare tool. But it will work off an 18v battery, or 12v car socket, or a mains supply. It's fast and pretty sturdy and the air pressure reading is very accurate, so I no longer feel the need to double check every tyre with my separate accurate pressure gauge.
I didn't have any DeWalt tools (I'm a Bosch and Ryobi fanboi) so decided to also buy a 5Ah battery and charger for it. I've used it on both the RX8 and XF and recommend.

Re: Air compressor for tyres - suggestions?
Just in case anyone is interested there seems to be a newer model of the ryobi one with screw on connector.
