i also recommend a decent self dimming helmet, the cheap ones from ebay or r-tech ect are garbage and make life hard. if you can, stretch to a esab sentinal. you wont regret it, blindingly good lids.

Does that mean the cheap ones are “blindingly” bad?

they work, but how well? it varies.

a decent mask will uv filter enough to save your sight even if it doesn't dim due to a fault. i tested a cheap one and it didn't.

ya pays ya money, ya makes ya choice :D

Neil is sorting me with some scrap bits. Be prepared for some revealing photos of me learning to weld.

https://www.weldtech.co.uk/ESAB-Sentine ... EcQAvD_BwE

there is a reason that is £200 more expensive than the others shown in this thread.....

quality. the lense is clearer, the arc easier to see, the fit is better, it has grinding mode (but i wouldn't use is on a £220 helmet!) the headband is comfier, the after sales support exists, etc, etc.

the more budget option is

https://www.weldtech.co.uk/ESAB-Warrior ... XkQAvD_BwE

also very good, and as cheap as i would ever go, its what i use when i don't want to use my best helmet. lense is almost as clear, the headband is more plasticy, etc but it just works, and you can be confident it will continue just working.

For twenty years all I had was a standard head shield with the option of changing the lens from a 11 to a 13 grade dark glass. And whiplash from flicking the shield down lol.
And every so often a visit to A&E
