Bought a MIG Welder

Post by ChrisHolmes » Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:43 am

Whilst I don’t need one, hopefully, at £20 this was worth a punt. Once the car is back in the road then I can have a poke around to see if this works or is a lemon.

you'll need a 32a supply for that :D

nice buy though, that's the bargain of the century at 20, the bottle alone is worth more, even empty!

tbf you probably can, but its a old transformer welder so you need to find inrush current and max standing current when in use.

http://www.einhelltools.co.uk/pdfs/store/17216.pdf

i cant find any mention of it in einhells documentation so it might be worth testing at max power with a clamp meter....

or going on migwelding.co.uk and asking the good pro people on there :D

also, pull the top off the plug and check someone hasn't bypassed the fuse :D. Good shout

Thanks for the tips

Basic question. How can you tell how much gas is in the bottle? The gauge is showing 2000psi.

2000 psi is about 1/2 full :D the red line is max fill on most bottles. (note most, some are filled to a lower pressure, these bottles are a ripoff)

edit, 200bar roughly is full on the cylinders i use. some are only filled to 150 (usually sold as hobby weld) that is several hours less welding with the same size bottle.

id strongly recommend a argon/co2 mix, pure co2 works, but leaves a messier weld and is harder to learn.

i use air products cylinders. they are account only, and will deliver and collect.

If your looking to do both stainless and mild steel then go for an argon co2 mix which will cost you more But cheaper than having two different bottles, but you will have to purchase different wire.

@qwakers. This jus5 gets to be a bigger bargain as the gas is an Argon C02 mix
@ Honkytonk. I am not that brave, clean thick metal would be a challenge!
@ Neil Just need the wire then

Note to self: get loads of practice. Making a bench and some shelving as a starter project perhaps

I had to teach Pauline to weld, after I broke my arm and the mudguard brackets cracked on the 'bike trailer.
It was more like Pauline teaching me how to swear, as she came out with language that would have made a squadie blush.
To be fair, she had it down after about an hours practice and even cut off some of the first joints and did them again much neater, and stronger.
