2 Stroke Custom Oil tank

Post by AshtonCox58 »

Hi all I thought that some people may find this interesting, so I will post the process that I have gone through so far to make a fully custom 2T oil tank. It is still unfinished and I will be adding to this thread as I go along with the build. I'm lucky enough to have the facilities to make a custom aluminium tank so thought I'd go for it and I also didn't really want to spend the money on some pre made ones. Also in future I am planning on getting it anodised and etched up with the OC/RX8 logo on the front to make it look all flash but for now I just need it function for my road trip at the end of the month, which I am already cutting it extremely fine with  .

The original idea was to replace the washer bottle tank and utilise the space, similar to most designs like RRP, and make a 2 in 1 tank for the 2T oil and also washer fluid.
Also its about a 3Litre tank
So far there has been 5 stages to the build and they are as follows:

Stage 1:
Simply put I made a cardboard box and came up with an original idea/sketch, and just developed that over time to work out what exactly I wanted, nothing too crazy complicated but something that will do the trick.

Stage 2:
The cardboard box got further developed including some caps and a few of the auxillary parts.

Stage 3:
Further development of the final cardboard box design.

Stage 4:
Manufacturing of the back plate and mounting Holes

Stage 5:
Oil tank folding and welding up.

The next things to come are to finish up the oil tank by adding a feed tube, and a dipstick for now and use it on my NC500 trip, and when I'm back I will be adding level sensors and a side glass too!
Once all of this has been finished I will be adding a second tank onto the front with a slightly more intricate design which will be used as a replacement washer bottle tank so that I can have 2 in 1.

I'm extremely pleased with how this has turned out so far and I can't wait to get the finished product!

Whilst your obvious a long way through the design and construction stages, you might still find this of interest.

Alloy tank 2.5L capacity, including "sump" and sight tube, while retaining original washer tank.

Oil held high in engine bay to ensure gravity feed to OMP - self-priming - exposed to engine bay heat to warm oil, as OMP normally fed with oil at (just under) circulation temperature.
