Carbon Fibre wrapping

Post by Delanor »

I thought I would ask you very clever RX-8 owners as I have decided I am not happy with the black mirrors on my Formentor and so I thought a carbon fibre look would be different but its something I have never done before so have watched a couple of how to videos but it seems that as the mirrors are quite angular a certain adhesive should used on sharp edges/corners and I am concerned what that means if you have to remove the vinyl at some time.

So can any of you wrappers advise! :-k

Have you searched for carbon fibre covers. I had a bargain on amazon with an incorrect priced carbon cover for both my Merc coupe and estate (same mirrors). Someone appeared to have misplaced the decimal point so I bought x2 pairs for the cars at £5.00 a set including prime delivery. They quickly changed to £50 a set, but in fairness they honoured my £5 bargain and are brilliant. Pre attached 3m tape, simply peel and stick over wingmirror. Look great, perfect fit and doesn't look like a cap is installed over. I probably would of even been happy at £50.

Have you looked into hydro dipping which is ideal for components like wing mirrors

WIP Mark - can`t decide what to do, if I wrap them the caps really need to come off and I`m a little concerned about the plastic tags that hold the caps on breaking, there are carbon fibre caps for £150 that fit over the top of the originals but what would they look like, or there are complete replacement carbon fibre caps but a slight problem they are at £440 a side!

Ali Express do carbon fibre caps for various cars for less than £20 but not the Formentor!

UPDATE - have just carefully removed the passenger side mirror cap and only 2 tags broke! #-o

I waited for a warm day but made a mistake - on Youtube some one removed the mirror cap and reckoned it easily pulls off, the tags/clips are strong "you won`t break them", mine came off easy one side but wouldn`t come off the other and there was no gap to get any sort of trim tool in to help anyway broken clips now re-constituted (fixed with an overlay of stainless steel sheet and Rolls Royce super strength adhesive)

Mark the caps are OE at £30 or copies at £22 in primer, mine are metallic black have got a couple of requests for the part number ready painted as the paint is a sort of satin/matt finish, if I modify anything I prefer to be able to return to standard if needed in the future.

Anyway onward and upward "lets wrap" how difficult can it be you never know mirror caps today a "Green" RX-8 40th Anniversary tomorrow"

I have considered it, but not DIY. I do not have the patience to do a roof. I've done small items. But a roof no. The irony of if it was wrapped, it would of been undamaged. Though this could be an excuse for a full wrap in midnight purple.....or soul red. But I like the white.

After recently wrapping my RX8 myself, to make it good, is really hard, the little details and corners are a nightmare, but the easiest panel was the roof by far, definitely a DIY-able one!

I did attempt it on the passenger mirror cap but being a bit of a novice I had decided it would be better to do it on a mirror cap off the car - mistake, plan A trying to hold a mirror cap with one hand whilst stretching the vinyl with a heat gun didn`t pan out well, frustration took over and plan A vinyl went in the bin (the one you don`t have to pay for) so after a localised repair on the now broken mirror cap tags its back on OK and plan B swiftly moved into action, I decided to go with some actual carbon fibre caps that fit over the existing caps so I placed my £150 order for a pair that were advertised as "in stock" to be emailed 2 days later "no stock" but new stock arriving in "roundabout 2 weeks" which is "roundabout" next Tuesday.

I`m afraid patience isn`t one of my better virtues so not overly confident on plan B delivering and pending a refund Plan C may ensue - attempting a wrap with mirrors in situ may yet be on the cards!

I don`t like to give up but there is a plan D depending on the success or failure of plan C - don`t bother!

Well the ongoing saga of changing the look of a pair of mirrors is not going according to plan, after resorting to plan B of carbon fibre covers that has failed as no stock now and its taken them over 2 weeks to decide that, so have decided to resurrect plan A wrapping them myself, it can`t be that difficult surely - but the Cupra is quite wide and not a lot of room in the garage to attempt this with the mirrors in situ so I just need it to stop raining now!
