LED 3rd Brake Light

Post by Vj4sothername » Sun Oct 18, 2020 12:16 pm

If this is the wrong place place please move the thread.... Currently under construction please hold caller, wanted to get this started before I forget to post, and what I did.

So following a buying thread I've started having a go at making my own LED 3rd brake light.

My first idea worked for me but was a little off piste from the the Essex rotary 3rd brake light.

Target light Essex Rotary:

My first attempt was using some 12v SMD LED light bars from eBay and as I mentioned worked for me and will tie in with my other lights project.

This was a simple process of taking the housing off the light. Sticking the two strips to the red lens, trimming off the excess to make them fit, wiring the 2 light strips to a load resistor (so as to not give the dash warning light) and soldering the load resistor to the bulb holder. All in all took me 3 hours to assemble and install in the car

Sadly I didn't take any pics mid construction but it's dead easy.

Tinted because black car..

But for the other members I wanted to get a bit closer to the target lights so I ordered 100 5mm LEDs spent 4 hours playing and soldering and got to the stage below.

The LEDs are too directional. When I powered on to test progress I went blind, dropped it and shorted out 3 rows.

I now have 10mm LEDs on route to knock down the 75 odd bulbs I was trying to cram in.

When they arrive I'll update this more of the build.

I'm using the excellent LED wizard to help calculate the resistance needed and help plan the array.

More to follow....

If you end up with lots of unused LEDs, I have a spare housing that could be converted

Once I get something working and sort out some of the issues (covering the gaps between LEDs) I'll drop you a PM Image

I prefer your Mk1 version rather than the target

Another thing that may be of interest to people is the potential for a small acrylic diffuser to be placed over the top. These are common in DRL strips that don't use fibre optics and produce a nice smooth light.

This sort of thing?
https://www.cutmyplastic.co.uk/light-di ... /H150-W50/

I've installed 20W led floodlights in the roof of my garage/workshop for general internal lighting.
Being 5m high they're pointing almost directly down and rarely get you directly in the eye, though they're quite bright.
I'd been thinking of adding sheets of the above to provide a more diffused light, without too much loss of lumens.
How much heat is directed back at the source and could this cause an overheat issue?

That last question gets us back on-topic as I assume it would also apply to brake light installs.

Few fitment issues I want to work on, but the bulb connectors and 10mm LEDs work well.

Now to find a good way to disguise the PCB. Wondering if filling the holes and just spraying the colour of the car would work? What would potential buys like? Once I have a final design I'll update the first post on how to construct your own.

They are brights! Need to lower the voltage to dial them down bit. That's over a 1m gap in full day light with house lights on!

A tiny on the lens would probably do them a world of good for both brightness and masking the breadboardish nature.

Could also just make a black/white bit of card/plastic to slot over to cover the breadboard.

What do you want on yours? Same tint as mine?

Still way to bright. Will look at an adjustable voltage divider so it could be tuned to each car.

Probably should have put the load resistor in too! ImageImageImageImageImage
