When my (side) skirts came off the guy doing it explained that they can be simply pushed back in, but in order to get them off you have to push/nudge them forwards towards the bonnet to free them out of their position before pulling the skirt outwards and off. He said people who don't know that just pull them straight out and then... yeah broken clips.

Osman: The two photos below should give you an idea of the skirt holes and their placement, the clips are on the ramp below in the first photo (there are two types at least):
