ESS Trigger wheel fitting

Post by PeteH » Tue Feb 13, 2018 12:09 pm

The ESS trigger wheel is a separate component, sandwiched between the crank pulley and the e-shaft flange. If you replace your crank pulley (perhaps because you are fitting a lightweight version) then you will need to replace the old trigger wheel behind your new crank pulley, and at this point you may be concerned that it appears that there are four alternative ways of fitting the trigger wheel.

In the words of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, DON'T PANIC!

Mazda have been clever, and the four screws that hold the pulley to the e-shaft flange are not symmetrical. In fact you can only fit all four screws when the ESS trigger wheel is in the correct one of its four positions. The following pictures demonstrate:

So if you can't get the bolts through your trigger wheel try a different orientation. Do not, under any circumstance, drill out the trigger wheel holes to make it fit!

Ps, The crank pulley also only fits in one orientation, although this is a by-product, because it really wouldn't matter.

Thanks for that Pete.

and, if you're replacing the trigger wheel you should always do a PCM Reset.

Mazda original instructions were "if replacing with new" but this was later changed to "if removing and replacing", presumably because the calibration is that critical for the ignition/injection timing.
