Has there been any update on this? It's been over a year since Fuchs took my gearbox away.

Cheers,

No update from me, I never did get any update on the oil sample I sent back. I should have chased it again (as offered by Guy up above) but life, and other priorities got in the way earlier in the year as I was closing my business and retiring.

It would be good to hear about the analysis of your gearbox though. TBH, although there is no definitive evidence, the overall "picture" does, IMHO point to the Fuchs oil being a major contributing factor in the failure of RX-8 gearboxes. I've treated my replacement gearbox (which had the same mileage approx as my failed one when fitted, but now using Redline MT-90) exactly the same as my old one and it's still going strong at 69k miles and a further 17 trackdays since it was fitted. Had the alternative explanation for my gearbox failure ("racing the 'box") been a factor, I would have expected the replacement box to have failed by now, but it's been flawless, proven by my best ever laptime at Snetterton yesterday (where my orginal 'box failed) - a full 3 seconds quicker than ever before.

i can confirm that i've not had any update or response following the original analysis.

my conclusion at the time was that the modified Fuchs formulation was too slick for the syncro rings, not allowing them to grip as designed and therefore the next gear wasn't spinning fast enough to change without damage.

i've not seen anything to disprove that prognosis.

I have exactly the same problem. Its started last year on track at japfest. A high pitched grind from 3 to 4 at 8000 + rpm, under that its fine. I take it I need a replacement, are there any around?

There's plenty on ebay but it's pot luck getting a good one, despite any assurances or guarantees from the sellers. I'm on my 2nd second-hand box since the original died with the 4th gear syncro problem.

Depending on your budget, you could get a fully reconditioned box with warranty for around £720 fitted, according to [urlw=http://www.reconditionedgearboxes.com/M ... index.html]this[/urlw] website.

You could try Nutty Chappie. He's a member of this forum and has a thread in the trader section.

Glen

Might be worth a word with RX-Motors, as they have moved from Salisbury recently, so very close to you I'm guessing;

Tim White runs the business and he's great with rotaries.

I've only recently seen this thread. My RX-8 doesn't get out much, a couple of k per year at most.
Some years ago I had the gear box oil changed to Syn 5, as a premium synthetic. It seemed fine, but more than occasionally I would miss shifts when pressing on, especially into 4th and down shifting to 3rd. I changed to Triple QX fully syn a year ago and no problems since. For quite a while I thought I had duff hand/foot/brain coordination on my part!
