Tyres – in a nutshell

There are many tyres available on the market. However, remember, you have a rear wheel drive sports car and the tyres are the only thing keeping you on the road. So make sure you have a decent set. The legal lower limit for tread depth is 1.6mm, but many people change when they hit 3mm as in the wet, 1.6mm is not great.

Of the many different tyre choices out there, the most commonly used amongst the RX8 community are (in alphabetical order):

Bridgestone Potenza 040 (original tyre - many move away from this ASAP)
Bridgestone Potenza 050
Falken 452 or 453
Goodyear Eagle
Michelin Pilot Sport
Toyo Proxes T1-R
Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta
Yokohama Advan Sport

The standard tyre size for the Series 1 is 225/45R18
Alternative sizes which are wider and do not affect rolling radius or the DSC are 235/40R18 or 245/40R18
The standard size for the R3 is 225/40R19

Recommended tyre pressures for the S1 and R3 is 32psi all round

The tyre label is a grading system through which manufacturers of tyres for cars, vans, and heavy trucks must specify:

  • fuel consumption
  • wet grip
  • noise classification
As shown below, the tyre label uses a classification from A (highest performing) to G (lowest performing). Information must be available in technical promotional literature (leaflets, brochures, etc.), including manufacturer websites. This has to be done for every new tyre within scope of the regulation sold on the EU market.

Fuel consumption

Fuel consumption is related to the rolling resistance. By reducing rolling resistance, the tyre consumes less petrol.

The fuel efficiency/rolling resistance section of the tyre label is calculated by the scale specified in annex one to the regulation and measured in accordance with annex 6 of Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regulation No 117 and its subsequent amendments. This is detailed in commission regulation (EU) No 1235/2011 amending regulation (EC) No 1222/2009.

Wet grip

Wet grip is one of the most important safety characteristics of a tyre. Tyres with very good wet grip have a shorter braking distance when it rains.

The testing method covers a procedure for measuring the deceleration performance of C1 tyres during braking, using an instrumented passenger car equipped with an Antilock Braking System (ABS), where “instrumented passenger car” means a passenger car that is fitted with the measuring equipment listed in section 4.1.2.2 for the purpose of this testing method. Starting with a defined initial speed, the brakes are applied hard enough on four wheels at the same time to activate the ABS. The average deceleration is calculated between two pre-defined speeds.
  1. The passenger car is driven in a straight line up to 85 ± 2 km/h.
  2. Once the passenger car has reached 85 ± 2 km/h, the brakes are always activated at the same place on the test track referred to as “braking starting point”, with a longitudinal tolerance of 5 m and a transverse tolerance of 0,5 m.
  3. The brakes are activated either automatically or manually.

    (i) The automatic activation of the brakes is performed by means of a detection system made of two parts, one indexed to the test track and one on board the passenger car.
    (ii) The manual activation of the brakes depends on the type of transmission as follows. In both cases, a minimum of 600 N pedal efforts is required.

    For manual transmission, the driver should release the clutch and depress the brake pedal sharply, holding it down as long as necessary to perform the measurement.
    For automatic transmission, the driver should select neutral gear and then depress the brake pedal sharply, holding it down as long as necessary to perform the measurement.
  4. The average deceleration is calculated between 80 km/h and 20 km/h.
Noise classification

The external noise generated by the tyre is expressed in waves: one black wave is the lowest noise level and three the highest.

Noise tests are undertaken in accordance with UNECE Regulation No 117 (same as EU directive 92/23/EEC).
