RX-8 at Santa Pod 3rd March

Post by shroom »

Soooo,

I'm off to Santa Pod on Sunday to a "run what ya brung" event to meet up with some old car friends :-) if anyone else is interested in popping down (or up) to Santa Pod then please do!

Just out of interest has anyone got any tips for going up the strip such as how to do a reasonable launch (rpm etc) and any ideas on what sort of time I should be aiming for?

I have a bone stock 231 S1 and a fat arse so not expecting ground breaking times.

Cheers
Tom

Done it before, it's good fun. Might see if I can make it along...

Anyways, on to your questions...

I have found that you will get a lot of axle tramp from a stock 8 if you launch high up the revs. Do a burnout - A for the lols and B because warmer tyres make a difference. Launch wise I found the best time with minimal tramp is about 3,500-4,000rpm for launch, but again this is dependant on your clutch control, tyres, tyre temp, track temp and also condition of your bushes.

In my previous RX8 (street ported 192 running a 6 speed box) ran around the 15 second mark and crossed the line doing ~88mph IIRC - although haven't been to the pod for a long time now so don't rely 100% on my memory here.

A lot of people will sit here and say that the RX8 isn't good for drag racing, don't bother etc. etc. when ultimately it's good fun and quite forgiving. You won't be beating much machinery in an 8, as the launch is a problem. Typically getting the 8 up in to the power band in 1st takes quite a while and, as anyone who has been to pod before will tell you, most races are won or lost in the first few feet from the line.

Either way, it's great fun so enjoy :D Ping some pics and info on your times up :thumleft:

Depending on how you're feeling and how your runs are going I would also recommend lowering your tyre pressures at the back down to ~25psi. Makes for a stickier launch I found. Also pumping the fronts up to about 40psi helps minimise the rolling resistance down the strip.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHANGE THEM BACK TO STANDARD BEFORE DRIVING HOME!

Great info there much appreciated! I will certainly look at the tyres and see about lowering the psi in the rear etc. I'm not going to go crazy on the launch although I will get some heat in the tyres :D

As you say it's a bit of fun and I'm certainly not looking to beat anyone. I'm going with a 330D and 335D X drive which will be in the low 13s / high 12s on the day and it's more of a social gathering which the Pod lends itself too.

If you do want to pop along please do more the merrier :-) I will be doing s YouTube video of the day along with the track day when I get time as I'm pants at editing videos so takes me ages.

I'll have a look, sadly the weather isn't looking so rosy for the weekend around my way - fingers crossed it is better at the pod
