Is the youngest member of the Taylor household taking part?
No Hannah isn't coming this time we decided that 3 solid days in the car seat is too much for wee Iris so Kerr's going shotgun in my 8.

Apologies not going to be able to make it up, even for the Friday sprint. Sadly work need me in tomorrow.

I'll get along to an event eventually!

Enjoy all, hope the weather isn't too bad for it.

Car prepped and all set for 5 a.m. start.
Christine and I will meet Ben at Castlecary, then whoever is at Stirling to convoy up for start at Inverness.

Problems with the 7 Kerr ?

I saw your car outside. I was up at the Falkirk Wheel earlier (got here a bit too early to check in so did a tourist thing). Just got back from the restaurant by the entrance after my dinner. See you in the morning, bright and early hopefully. ;) I'm aiming to leave here at 5.30 to make sure of not missing Ben and the others at Stirling services.

Have a great time all. I did the trip last year with my brother. It’s fantastic.
Tomorrow I’m instead heading to Wales to drive some narrow twisties there!!! Hopefully they’ll be as good as the roads on the NC500

Aiming for 5.30. Little one was a bit excited last night and didn't drop off until nearly midnight. Hopefully he is suffering from sleep deprivation and will nod off earlier tonight.

Good morning to all you intrepid folks setting on today. Looks like a damp start for today but tomorrow's forecast looks good for your drive up the west coast.

Not long back at the Falkirk Travelodge following our final run down from Wick and the old military road from Inverness, which was all good fun. I think I made full use of the TCS/DSC and ABS.
Huge thanks again to Ben for organising the weekend and leading all the driving from the front =D> and to all my fellow reprobates who were following him, good company and good banter all the way round. Ooft!

There is no excuse for anybody tempted but wavering for next year, this is easily the best thing you will do in your RX-8. Sign up now! :sign:

Absolutely fantastic weekend thanks to Ben Taylor Minisaki, the 5 cars that took part thoroughly enjoyed it, personally think Ben should get more help from Club to promote events in Scotland or is that a mote point. He led whole weekend from start to finish, which if you've drove on these roads you'll understand. But what a host and a true ASSET to rx8 owners and club. He should be funded for road trip booklet, leading drive outs and generally promoting club and rx8. True gent and enthusiast. Total respect & Love, great weekend

Having lead for the run up the West Coast a couple of years ago I know how stressful it can be going round those blind bends and over those blind brows for several hours, there is of course one advantage and that is when you suddenly see the road ahead is a clear set of twisties and.... well you what happens then!
The roadbook makes a great souvenir and I know took quite a while to produce.
Bens efforts in promoting the club in Scotland have been officially acknowledged with an award at an AGM and continue to be appreciated as are the efforts of the folks who support his events as the distances driven to events can be considerable.
Well done everyone who went and made the event a success again.

F :censored: ing great drive lads! I fully agree with Shaggy that this is THE best thing you can do with your RX8. We were truly the kings of the road up there, howling through woods, coastside runs, and tearing up and down the sides of bloody mountains. If you don't come you'll never know what you're missing!

Superb weekend again, Thank you David, Charles, Brian, Andrew, Geoffrey and family for coming along and making the road trip worth doing. You're an awesome bunch and I hope to see you all again soon. I'll post up in January for the 2019 dates once I have everything confirmed. I'm already looking forward to it :thumleft:

Re: Big Scottish Road Trip 2018! (14-16 Sept)

Post by Shagrington » Thu Sep 20, 2018 6:14 am

I've been doing my sums so anybody considering driving up from the south of England or anywhere a similar distance away for this trip next year will have some idea of the costs etc. :money:

My hotels for 6 nights (Teeside airport for 2 nights - one each way, Falkirk Travelodge for 2 nights, Ullapool and Wick for 1 night each) totalled £258.50. You may prefer to head straight to Falkirk or somewhere nearer the start point so may not need the extra two nights away (I had another two nights away to make a full week of it but stayed with a friend on the way up and back, so those were free  ).

I used 9 tanks of petrol (or filled up 9 times having started from home with a full tank). :race: The least I put in for a fill up was 31 litres, the most was 50 litres (at the end of 'day 1 from Inverness to Ullapool where we drove 204.8 miles) ... I didn't take a jerry can for emergency top ups, so it is as well I didn't need one - others on the trip did. I can't imagine what they were doing wrong.
I have worked out that my best tank got me 27.375mpg (that was from home to near my first hotel where I covered 291 miles and only managed to put 48.32 litres in to fill up) and the 'worst' (but most fun  ) was from Ullapool to Thurso - 176.6 miles and 44.89 litres which I make 17.89mpg. In total I did 2098.2 miles (I came home 'the pretty way') and used 384.18 litres so averaged 24.828mpg (possibly a bit more than that as I still have half a tank left).
Total costs for my petrol (not counting the fill up before I left home) were £512.70, but bear in mind the current price of petrol and the fact that most places were charging a few pence above the 'average' ... oh also bear in mind I used 95 Ron and no premix, so I wasn't paying the extra for that or 98/99 Ron. I only had to put half a litre of oil in too.

So, petrol and hotels together total £771.20. Add the costs for meals (I need to say thanks again to Geoff and his lovely wife and family for treating me to the meal in Falkirk on Sunday night =D>), drinks and snacks etc (say £20-ish per day) and I don't think that is at all bad for one of the best road trips/driving holidays you will have. :race:
