So i was planning on basically doing the same 3 day trip as outlined on the main page - how long is the drive from Inverness to Ullapool for day 1? Reason I'm asking is it takes me 3 hours to drive to inverness.. then another 6 hour drive to ullapool..?! lol id be tempted to just stay over in inverness for a night and starting the trip fresh on the next morning... hmm..

If you don't stay over near Inverness you will be doing what those of us who came up from the south did as we stayed Thursday night in Falkirk. That meant a ridiculously early start (5.30-6.00 I think) on Friday to get to Inverness for a bacon roll from the van in B&Q car park where everybody else met us before heading off. The bacon roll was good. :thumright:

Hmmm... food for thought indeed! I think ill just take a drive to Inverness later in the afternoon, stay overnight and wake up ready to take on the NC500 the next day.
2 x NC500's within 2 months of each other? Easy... Right?! lol

We are staying at the Premier Inn in Inverness (out of town) on Thursday night.

If nothing else, you could pop in on Friday morning and meet us all for coffee and bacon* rolls and see what mistake you made by traveling alone only a few weeks before ;)

*other food preferences may be available, although don't count on it from a trailer kitchen in a B&Q car park

As I'm sure many of you have noticed I'm pretty quiet on here. This is just down to me hitting things head on as they come and as I do all the organization for Scottish events it's usually month by month. Great to see a few of you already looking forward to it. I'll became much more active shortly as I'm sorting out the Scottish car show stand then the Scottish summer BBQ.
Just skimming through yorkie get it booked. Wagner unfortunately stop offs are pretty scarce and also pretty brief as although not massively high miles you'll find we'll be in 2nd and 3rd most of the time with a pretty low average speed. I run the convoy pretty quickly clearing the way at the front meaning cars behind can flow better. It's not flat out dangerously but a good pace. Nobody is at any time pressured to keep this pace if they're not comfortable either.
I have just completed the trip road guides and maps hopefully I've done as good as Chris Holmes done for me in the past years.
Quick summary to avoid confusion.
Friday: I'll be leaving Glasgow 0500. Stopping at Old inns services at 0530. Stopping at Stirling services at 0600. I plan to be in Inverness B&Q no later than 0830. Folk traveling up are more than welcome to meet me at either services to convoy up. I'll explain on the morning what we're doing and get to know everyone. We'll drive across to Ullapool for the night.
Saturday: I'll discuss and plan a start time Friday night we'll drive across to Wick for the night.
Sunday: much the same leaving wick down back through Inverness down the old military road finishing up at Kinross services north of Edinburgh.
Serious reminders:
Have a Gerry can, strongly recommend having breakdown cover that let's you get the car where you want it to go, good tyres, good brakes, camera, coat, wooly hat (it is Scotland), seriously make sure you and your car are fit for 3 days of pretty intensive driving a lot of which is going to be on twisty single track roads with passing places.
All said and done you'll love it. I haven't had 1 member say they didn't enjoy it and plenty who came back for more.
As always any questions please feel free to ask.

No worries, then.

Kimberley and I are really looking forward to this.

Only wish more people were coming because it will be an epic journey.

Shagrie was telling us about the off-the-route roads he has taken.

BTW, are we having "Big Scottish Road Trip" screen stickers?

More people is both good and bad. It's awesome to have a massive group but also too many means we seriously struggle finding places to stop and would become a pain for local folk trying to go about their day. This is why I don't promote it too heavily. If "they" was the road books I'll either send out a link of just print some off. They won't be up to the standard Chris Holmes done but the information is there. If you ment about me and Hannah having a wee girl we're fine as long as she's not 3 weeks early. I'll look into something for the cars unfortunately last year it seems that it gives folk opposed to the nc 500 a reason to moan.

Well, good luck to Hannah and you (yes, that's what I meant).

And of course, the baby ;)

Fully understand on the "too many drivers spoil the broth" thing, specially as the passing points would get a bit congested.

I still refuse to accept that it gets cold in God's chosen Country.

Being 30% Scottish means I'm a bit biased towards the weather.

Thanks for the compliments regarding the road books Ben, whilst I am not doing the trip this year if you want the usual bound individual road books I could produce them and probably send them up with Wagner.
Congrats to you and Hannah I had not picked up the good news about the imminent family addition.

It is a 9 mile stretch of road that you'll hit late Saturday afternoon with the convoy and you won't miss anything special on that stretch by being diverted. I can't imagine the traffic will ever be so bad on that bit of road that it will be anything other than a minor inconvenience anyway - it won't be like queueing for hours in 6 miles of unmoving traffic to try and get through the Dartford Tunnel on a Friday evening. If anything it will just be a short detour down another nice little road.

BIG SCOTTISH ROAD TRIP 2017 in September

Post by GreySilver Beast » Tue Jul 11, 2017 2:18 pm

Brian have you ever driven in Glasgow rush hour traffic  it's nothing compared to the M25 Traffic that us Southerners have to injurer endure every time we drive that stretch of road :!:

Even the rush hour Traffic in Edinburgh was a breeze

 Yes. my brother and I often have a chuckle at things like reports in the highlands of "traffic chaos" accompanied by a picture of temporary traffic lights and 5 or 6 cars having to wait for them to change.

I usually just endure the traffic down this way and allow extra time to get places (like an hour and a half to get the 10-11 miles to go bowling when it will take me only an hour if the roads are "clear" ), although it is sometimes tempting to injure some people in the queues.

I just spent 4 hours in traffic driving to Epsom Downs, a shop to ship an item back to Amazon, a stop at B&Q in Sutton and collect some Protek-R from LrRx8's place in Mitcham [edit](total no more than 20 miles)[/edit]

Four sodding hours.

I'll swap for any traffic in Scotland/Wales/West Country any day.

IMPORTANT!!!

I WON'T NOW BE RUNNING THE BBQ OR THE SCOTTISH ROAD TRIP THIS YEAR!!!!
I'm sure many of you know but for those who don't mine and Hannah's baby Iris was born 08/08/17 (8 day :thumleft: )
She's in a special baby unit as she's nearly 2 months early so obviously Iris and Hannah take priority.

If you used booking.com then you'll be able to cancel for free usually for the rooms as I have done. Also feel free to still do it I just won't be there. I'll be doing the road trip again next year so you're welcome to do it then.

First of all, hope that Hannah and Iris are well and that Iris is soon out of hospital and back with you two at home, where she belongs.

We are still doing the trip as we have been looking forward to it for a long time.

All the best to you and thanks for letting us know.

Congratulations Ben and Hannah - and absolutely your priority must be with Iris and Hannah. :thumleft:

For all those who have booked to go on this trip I would say carry on and enjoy it. It is mostly a straightforward route (you are following the coast for the most part) and if Chris is producing his road books for Wagner to take with him you won't go far wrong ... and even if you do take a wrong turn the scenery and roads are still worth it and you will be back on track again before very long. 8)
