Well done, let us know how you find them.

Based on my experience and many other "trackies" on here, you'll love pushing these on track! The grip and confidence they give powering through corners is brilliant.

Are federal 595R's road legal? Can you drive to the track with them? Or do you swap them somehow once there?

They are ok in the wet you just need to get a bit of heat in them.

I drove around Oulton Park on brand new 595RSRs in the wet and was impressed by the grip. I found they were "OK" in the wet until the tread got down to ~3mm, then you had to be cautious.

Re: pressure, I've run dozens of track days and sprints on either Toyo R888R or Yoko A050s. I tend to set pressures 'cold' at 26psi, then let them rise up to 28 or so.

Re: Track tyres....

My BlancPain Sprint partner who had his mild heart attack and ruined our 2018 season is now fully recovered and out testing.
He sent me an email about some new tyres he is testing so I thought I might put this here as I rate his opinion on tyre matters.

He has been testing a new trye called Zestino Gredge 07RS vs Toyo R888R.
It seems Demon Tweeks now sell them: https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/zestino ... s-2012154/ and they are cheaper than the Toyos.

The good thing is that they come in soft compound (140) which is what he tested in 235/40/17 against the Toyos which were 235 45 17.
He did this test because we have both felt that the Toyos and the Nankang AR1s feel very wooden when compared to Michelin Cup 2s which are brilliant for feedback.
Well it was a good result: the Zestinos were a whole second quicker (1:03:347) than the Toyos (1:04:387) and he noted that the feedback, while not up to Cup2 standards was way, way better than the Toyo.
I am sorely tempted to replace my R888R (225/45/15) which are on the MX5 with these 07RS (205/50/15) but Demon Tweeks are saying it will be 63 days before delivery!! I will see if I can get them quicker from someone else.

Ranjan.

Found them :!: 1 to 5 days delivery

About 140 Euros for RX-8 sizes, so cheaper than the AR-1. Let us know once you've tried them Ranjan.

Track Tyres

Post by Barry John »

Hello there.
I have recently acquired an RX8 which I am planning to use as a track day car. What tyres would be best for track use on 18” wheels? Any advice or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Barry,
Welcome to the club 👍
There’s two questions before replying : 😉
Firstly what is your track driving experience ? First time on track, novice, experienced, raced cars, etc ?
Secondly what spec is the car, suspension, brakes etc
Regards

Hi Pete

Thank you.

Absolutely no experience on a track at all total novice.
Standard brake discs and callipers at the moment but will be fitting better pads “blue stuff” to start with, suspension I will be upgrading to R3 spec.

Thanks

Re: Track tyres....

I don't see your problem Pete. Having a specific question about track tyres in the "I'm new here" is not the best place for users finding answers to questions in the future.

I moved Barry's post here as there were already 3 topics running on the same subject of track tyres. I PM'd Barry to let him know I'd done this and to point him to other useful advice he might find in this FAQ area on tracking his car. Barry's question isn't "lost" - it still flows nicely, as previous posts in here pre-date Barry's, so you and others can continue to answer his query.

If we followed your logic, we'd have a topic started hundreds of times on each and every subject and it would be chaos. There would be no chance of finding anything.

If the car is basically standard, and you're driving to the track, and you don't have spare sets of wheels for dry/wet track conditions, then my advice would be to fit a good set of road tyres, rather than anything "track" specific.

Road tyres have a much wider operating window, regarding temperature and track conditions.

You could get caught out by track tyres if the track is damp, or you struggle to get them up to temperature.

Many track tyres aren't road legal, which could cause problems on the drive to/from the track, and even those that are legal don't provide the same level of grip at lower speeds.

You're not going to be driving fast enough or for long enough to overheat a good road tyre in a track session, as you're only going to be circulating for 15/20 minutes at a time, including a warm-up and cool-down lap.

For a novice driver I would even consider something like Rainsports, which would struggle a bit in the hands of an experienced fast driver on a hot dry track, but for a novice driver you're unlikely to get them that hot, even if the track is dry. However, if the track is damp or even soaking, they provide an amazing level of grip with a predictable break away on the limit.

Don't be tempted to drive with the DSC switched off, unless you want to be the cause of Red Flags and barrier recovery. Much better to use the system to show you when you're over-driving the car and not getting the best from the power, handling and braking.

Re: Track tyres....

Thanks for your advice, I think this sounds like a better option for me good quality road tyres instead of specific track tyres. A mate has advised the same too as that’s what he normally does.
Which of the Rainsports would you recommend as it seems there’s a few types Uniroyal do? Guessing best option is get the most expensive as they should be a better tyre.

Thanks

I use the Rainsport 5 on my XF. They've been excellent, even in extreme heat, and I'm sure they'd hold together nicely on your first few track days.
