CG-Lock the best way to keep in control

Post by warpc0il »

It's all well and good getting your car to take the corners well but the limiting factor, even with standard suspension and tyres, is keeping your arse in the seat so you can maintain control - especially if you have "leather" seats.

This is where the CG-Lock really comes into it's own.

Image

By keeping the lap section of your seatbelt locked tight, it holds you firmly in the seat and prevents you sliding around while cornering and braking, as used by The Stig when setting performance lap times around the Top Gear test track.

The benefits of the CG-Lock were recognised a couple of years ago, resulting in a group buy being arranged. This first gb was well received and over subscribed.

Last year I was arranging a second gb for all those that missed-out, those that had seen the (unfair) advantage that others had using them on-track, and those that had only recently joined.

Long story short, that gb was changed to a bulk purchase for the Club Shop, which makes it even easier for any member to obtain one (or two) of these devices at a significant discount.

The advantages of the CG-Lock aren't limited to the track and I keep mine fitted all the time, as it greatly improves the support and security of the drivers seat; great when "making progress" on the twisting bits and, by improving your seated posture, even makes it less tiring on long journeys.

The CG-Lock has also been proven to significantly reduce injuries in medium/high speed crashes; which is why it's recommended by BRAKE, the road safety charity

If you frequently drive with a passenger, either on-track or on the road, I'd advise fitting to both front seats. It also works very well with child booster seats, in either the front or back, such that it's been given The National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval

Fitting the CG-Lock only takes a couple of minutes with the tools provided.
Just follow the instruction in our handy DIY Guide.

The CG-Lock fits most cars, so those with more than one on the drive might consider buying extra devices to avoid having to swap them around. Note however that Member's discount price is limited to two units per member, to ensure that everyone gets a chance to take advantage of the discount.

I borrowed one from N1xon at Cadwell Park last year and can vouch for how good they are over standard steat/belt combo. Not quite a full race set up but for the ease of use and cost v good.

The R3 seats have slightly better lateral control (cornering) but don't to anything more to stop you sliding forward under braking.

If you're not being pushed forward while braking on the track, then you're not braking nearly hard enough.

Conversely if you're braking suddenly enough to trigger the inertia reel on the seatbelt you're doing it wrong.

I no longer use these, for two reasons

The first one the screws broke trying do it up tight enough, the second one came of whilst driving ( two diffferent cars) not being tight enough, see first problem, they do seem to work , bit I feel they could do with a better attachment, maybe stainless screws, saying that I suppose you could always buy aftermarket screws

If you still have the locks Paul I will see if I can get you the required stainless screws.

Despite your experience I am in the 'warpc0il camp and use mine permanently in the car, just tighter for track days.
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

Still got the locks, screws would be good

Thanks Ray

And I do agree they are good just can't get mine tight enough, maybe they work/grip better on RX8 seat belts

Paul, did you have one of the original CG-locks (with the short release handle??)

They have revised the design slightly with these newer ones: slightly longer release handle, And they are supplied with three sets of screws of different lengths (for different seat belts I guess)

I had both, funnily enough I found the newer one with the longer handle, worst as the handle got in the way , probably more car related than product.

The screw which I chose ( middle size) (best option, one was too long, one wouldn't even reach the other side)was just sitting above flush, so any more tightening of the screws( not sure the screws wouldn't break if I tightened it any further either) would probably cause the screws to catch on the seat belt.

It's not possible to damage the belt if you fit the clamp as per the DIY thread

It is if the screws are too long, as I said earlier although there are three different screw sizes, none were perfect, again this is more a car seat belt problem than CG lock problem.
I had no problem with protruding screws on the Renault , but the CG lock did come off after a few track sessions. with the MX5 I have the problem with the screws being a little to long (medium size) and again the CG lock came off after a few track sessions, I dare not tighten the screws any more for two reasons one being any further through and the seat belts got more chance of catching on the screws ansd secondary the screws might snap which is what happened to my first CG lock

When fitting my CG Locks, being a nice bloke I also put one on the passenger side, I removed the "extra" loop from the belt buckle as all it does is stop the buckle sliding down the belt when you take the belt off. This mod allows the CG Lock to be fitted as per standard instructions.
