Trackday Insurance

Post by Naz »

I've had a search and not been able to find much info on this. It would be good to have people's experience of track insurers. hopefully this thread won't be very big as there won't be many claims. but worth having prices quoted for different tracks from different track insurers.

I'll start it off, and if you could add any quotes, as well as dealings (if you are unfortunate enough to have any), i think this would be quite a valuable guide for newcomers. please keep any comments as brief as possible. lets keep this thread informative, if people want to discuss, then please do so via PM or another thread.

1. Brands Hatch, 3/12/2010. REIS £81. Value £6,000, excess 10%

Not sure if this is appropriate or not but I thought it might be of guidance to anyone thinking of insuring their old-banger-track-day car instead of their RX8:

1994 Scoobie WRX 2.0 Turbo remapped and significantly modified - REIS quote: £62.50 for min. value £2500.00, excess 10% (Oulton Park)

2. June 2007. Brands Hatch, MORIS £150 (collision) + £14.50 (recovery) £164.50. Sum Insured: £14000 , Excess: £1200.
3. August 2009. Bedford Autodrome. MORIS £41.29 (collision). Sum Insured £8500. Excess: £750. *CLAIMED*. Payout: £8,500.
(Cost to my pocket was about £1000, considering the Excess & cost of recovery to garage... And about £12,000 to buy a new R3!)

Re: Trackday Insurance

I have used MORIS, Motorsport Insurance Sevices and (currently) REIS.

In my experience the cost of insurance for single trackday is ~1% of the car value (ie £100 for £10,000 insured) with a 10% excess (£1000 in this example). It's important to check exactly waht is covered, but generally any damage resulting form an impact whilst on track is covered. Note, an impact in the pits is sometimes excluded specifically! The insurance is generally very basic - cover for the cost of repair, but no recovery form the track or other frills, which might be available from some insurers at extra cost.

I'm currently on an REIS road/track policy which cost only ~£100 more than my previous road only policy, but includes 4 trackdays per year. Extra trackdays are just £50. Not only is this cheaper for me, but I simply have to email REIS the day before the trackday and put my car on cover. I actually did 5 days with them last year and the extra day's cover was simply a phonecall to REIS with a credit card number. Previously, I was filling out a long form for each event; now, it's so much easier!

I've not had to make any claim thus far ( [-o< ), but an RX-7 owner, insured with REIS, had to make a claim for £7,500 of damage sustained at Cadwell Park last June. He had his claim authorised within a few days and I spoke to him after his car had been repaired (it looked immaculate at Rotorstock, some 10 weeks later) and he was delighted with the handling of his insurance claim. So, I can thoroughly recommend REIS, based on this recent experience .

As per 'casey' except mine was £100 less than my renewal quote (ironically with the same insurance company :? ) with all of the added benefits he has quoted.
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

I have been using Moris
my premiums have varied from £100 up to £125 dependong on the track. Excess has always been £1000 but I have tagged on excess insurance and recovery usually.
I think I have insured it for about £8500 considering mods to be replaced in the event of a write off.

The Elise is covered for six track days a year on my road insurance policy. That costs £550/annum with mileage limited to 7500 miles. Excess for track day cover is £1000 + the £100 standard excess. Car value is £17500. That's through Competition Car Insurance, with the policy underwritten by Aviva.

^^^ I've got quotes from CCI in the past for individual trackdays and they weren't as competitive as Moris or MIS at the time. However, that annual policy look to be as good as, or even better than REIS. If you do use the 6 trackdays per year, that would cost more than £550 to cover, so you get the road insurance for free! Which is pretty much what attracted me to the REIS road/track offer.

For comparison, my REIS policy includes 4 trackdays, unlimited mileage, protected claims, Class 1 business use, £1,000 trackday (£300 road)excess, and £9,000 valuation cover for £519.

yep would agree that REIS and CCI offer some great packages however they quoted me somthing like £1100 for a new premium including the track days when i went to renew in August 2010
this was phanominaly high compared to my £510 from Sky for just my usual road cover.

hopefully ill remember to get some quotes early enough to check out REIS this year for track cover. and hopefully they will provide me with a very competative quote for road insurance this coming August

Nigel, have a look over HERE

As your car is new, with a high value (unlike mine now!) be sitting down when you get the quote. It'll probably be between £150 and £200 (my guessitmate).

Casey, you've got brilliant price there, I envy you!

Just insured mine for Social, Domestic, Pleasure, Commuting (in case the main cars are unavailable) for 5000 miles including 4 trackdays, 5 years NCB, for myself and my better half (no convictions, points, etc, etc) for the value of £7000 with REIS - £872.26.

It is still not a bad price for me, as the value of 4 trackdays to me would be around £360, which means that the road policy is around 512.26 - which is approximately the cheapest I've been getting on price comparison sites.

Here is a little-known fact: for those of us who have done days with Carlimits http://www.carlimits.com/ (Andrew Walsh) or http://drivertuition.com/ in the last 3 years, REIS offers discount. I only found out about this today.

So not only did I have a wonderful day on 21/06/2010 with 3 other guys and Andrew Walsh as a trainer (thanks for organizing it, Iain!), but I can also get a discount on my renewal with REIS! Brilliant!
