***TRACKDAY, Brands Hatch, Friday 5th December***

Post by casey » Tue Jun 10, 2014 12:56 pm

Unbelievable :lol: , I seem to post up this event earlier every year! Last year I started the thread on 13th July, so over a month earlier this year.....

Not only that, last year we had a discount code that was available until around the end of August, whereas the early price this year of £99 (effectively with a discount) has already gone up to £120. Well done to those who shelled out early (I didn't :oops: )

For those of you who haven't been to this event before, it has become a popular event, a bit of a tradition really, although not quite on the scale or prestige of Wimbledon :D It has been a regular event in the club calendar since 2008. Harrizone, Zarterone and I have attended every Dec Brands Hatch day since then :D

TWENTY TWO cars came along last year and we had a great time - link to last year's thread - LINK HERE

So, let's start the ball rolling

Track and event details for anyone new;
CIRCUIT STATS:
Length - 1.2 miles (Indy)
Corners - 5
Noise - 105db (compulsory stationary test)

PROVISIONAL TIMINGS OF THE DAY:
- Sign On 07:30 - 08:30
- Briefing: 08:30am
- OPL from 09.00
- Lunch 12.30-13.30
- OPL 13.30
- Track Closes 16.00 (Day light permitting)

Book your place via THIS LINK

Newcomers to trackdays are very welcome; please be aware that the track can be a little cold, wet and greasy at this time of the year, so can be more challenging (and fun) to drive :D Luckily, we've often been blessed with cool, but bight, sunny days, where most of the track dries out and warms up a bit by lunchtime. Of course, I won't mention the year the event was postponed due to 2 feet of snow :lol:

We should be able to offer a "Buddy" to anyone who requests one. This means you will be assigned an experienced trackday driver who will stay with you from the very start of the day until you are happy to unite the knot :lol: The Buddy can help you as much or as little as you want; help with checking your car, signing on, noise testing, getting to the briefing, passenger laps (you driving, and/or Buddy driving to show lines), etc. I always recommend people new to the track also book a "formal" tuition slot, 20 mins with a qualified instructor for ~£20. Great value for money if you are new to trackday driving.

If you are unfamiliar with Brands Hatch then this will help you visualise what it's like to drive;

A “nearside foglight” perspective;
HINTS:
1. Turn your sound down low, the wind noise isn't good!
2. Click on the 360p and select 720p to get the HD version of the video.
[youtubewide][/youtubewide]

I'll start a list of names in the next post here; please quote and add your name if interested and want to stay for a meal at the end of the event. If you have any questions, please post up here or PM me.

Finally, here is a previous track briefing, which I will update and re-issue later in the year…

Seriously, screw this owners club! I have booked 4 track days for the rest of this year and I've never been on track with a car before! All of my money is going down the drain for a little bit of an adrenaline rush! Now I need to buy a helmet, GoPro, a spare set of brake pads, RB cat-back and anti-roll bars before going to Snetterton in September! Damn all of you and this well run RX8OC that conveniently organizes track days and other social events! :mrgreen:

Yep, that's a serious addiction; "4 trackdays booked and never done one before" :D

I missed your name on the Snetterton list - just spotted you are on that one too. I look forward to meeting you there :thumleft:

What is Brands Hatch like for accident potential (given the likelihood of a slippery surface)? Run offs? Gravel traps? I always sucked at this track in videogames...

Mmmmm!! We seem to have had more 'offs' at Brands Hatch than anywhere else and all at the 'Naz' corner (so called because his was the first at a Club day), or to give it the correct name Clearways. Like all tracks, in the damp, or wet, any corner can catch you out but caution is the order of the day until you have some warmth in the tyres, and on wet days a good road tyre has it over something like the Federals a lot of us use. However, take the right line at Clearways and all should be good and even if you think you might be running out of road the golden rule is continue to steer around it and keep your foot on the throttle, back off, or brake and I can almost guarantee you will be meeting the tyre wall, unless of course the gravel slows you down sufficiently. To date it never has. Most corners have a gravel trap, but the armco is not that far away, or sufficient run off onto grass. Like all tracks take it easy until you know the track conditions and your way around and then feel free to increase your speed until you feel comfortable.

PLease don't let the above put you off, there are any number of us that have been there with no incident and you can take passenger rides or 'buddy' with one of the regulars to show you the ropes. Once you master Paddock Hill bend you won't get a better feeling it's truly awesome and so iconic.
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

I've driven it about 8 times now, mostly in December and never strayed off the tarmac. I don't hang about, chasing the elusive sub-60 second lap (60.4 best so far, post analysis of video, no live timing visible!). Due to the challenging corners and huge gradients, this track is more challenging than some others. There are gravel traps, but we did have a situation about 18 months ago where 2 RX-8's went off in near identical places (Clearways), went over the gravel trap and both cars severely scraped the tyre wall. Damage was quite extensive. This was despite earlier warnings that this part of the circuit, when off-line, can be hazardous. So, like any trackday, there are dangers if you are "pushing it" and get offline. To be fair, both drivers admitted they had got over-confident mid morning and pushed too hard, too soon when maybe the track still hadn't dried out completely. They may well have got away with no incident later in the day.

I will post up my "Trackday Briefing" for Brands nearer the date (look back at previous Brands Hatch trackdays for a copy, which I will update). You'll see warnings about Clearways, which will be repeated in the morning briefing on the day.

I have driven this track on the "wrong tyres" (worn semislicks) in the pouring rain and it was "interesting", with not much grip in the corners. The car was all over the place, but driving to the conditions meant no off-tarmac excursions or spins, just learned a lot about the car's handling in difficult conditions.

TBH, I've had much worse weather and track conditions driving at Mallory Park in August than I have at Brands in December, such is the potluck of UK weather :lol: We have been blessed, more often then not, by a damp track in the morning at Brands in December, but dry by 11am with a lovely winter sun - cold yes, but very pleasant crisp and fresh days).

I guess what I'm saying, and this is true of all tracks (but Brands moreso) is that accuracy in corner speeds and position is critical. If you get it wrong at Brands, you may suffer some damage.

Summing up, this is not the track for a nervous novice, but hugely rewarding to drive, especially given it's iconic place in British and International motorsport history.

EDIT: :D I started writing the above before Harrizone posted up, but I see we both used the word "iconic"! This is a circuit that any petrolhead with an interest in motorsport should drive at least once. The "Paddock Hill" blind entry experience from the man straight is absolutely awesome :D

Hi all,

Might look to take some of you guys up on the buddy idea, we've got a friend who'd like to join us and is new to the whole trackday thing. Plus Soph and I haven't done Brands before, so a bit of experienced coaching would go a long way :)

Looking at MOT's site, it would appear that one car and three drivers would be £150, I guess there are helmets available to hire on the day? Soph and I will buy our own in advance, but Lorraine probably won't.

Hi Sam, when you purchase your place, just confirm on here you'd like a "Buddy" and I'll make sure you have one on the day.

Yes, plenty of helmets on hire at £10 (usually), just get there early to get maximum choice of sizes. Not normally a problem though. If Lorraine needs a small (55-56cm) helmet, let me know as I can bring a spare (open face) one along on the day (no charge). If you are not sure on size, google how to measure your head for a helmet - you just need a measuring tape to do it. If close to 55-56cm them I can bring my small one along to try anyway. If too tight then nothing to lose, just hire one anyway.

I guess you've already spotted the helmet thread for some advice? LINK HERE

If you are always going to use the helmet in a closed-top car then I'd recommend a good open-face helmet with strong cheek protection. It's sooooo much more comfortable than a full face helmet and less "intrusive" if you don't wear a helmet regularly.

I've got this helmet V2 Tour which has good "Snell 2010" compliance and is very comfortable to wear. However, helmets can be got for under £40 with just EU bike certification. There is no requirement for meeting any helmet spec on a trackday, but your head is very important, so worth getting a good protection!

Thanks for the tips there chaps, I'll be booking the day early next month once Lorraine's availability is worked out. We'll take a look round for some head cases, there are several bike shops near us so we'll see what works. I'll let you know if those spare helmets might be needed - thanks for the offer on those :)
