NOT the Devil's Punchbowl Meet

Post by jsd » Tue May 24, 2005 10:32 pm

Nice weather, nice roads and a nice car..

So plugged a few locations into the Tomtom, set for shortest route, and go..
End result, a route that with a bit of tuning might keep a few of us smiling..

Start at the Devil's Punchbowl Cafe on the A3, do a fast road stretch before changing to a more technical twisty section for the last part of the drive.
You never know, we might even get as good as the Scot's at these driving meets.. :)

Finish up at the same place we start..

Anyone interested.. Possible dates would be in July or early September

Devil's Punchbowl Meet

Post by Tomsk » Wed May 25, 2005 10:14 am

Might come on my own if it's going to be a hairy experience !
I'll be in Wales for the week commencing 10th Sept, though.

No, no, no. You're doing it all wrong! To emulate a true Scotmeet, you want to pick the LONGEST route between two points!!

Have fun!

I always, thought you scots, were frugal with your money. So long boring motorway journeys at 60 mph, then.

Depending on the date, I may be in. A bit of a trek, for me, though.

Sorry I couldn't make it.

To avoid Sunday daytime drivers there is a lot to be said for very early morning jaunts followed by a decent cafe and cooked breakfast.

Well done, Jon. An entertaining afternoon. Sorry I had to back away early.

I like AW8's idea of a breakfast run. Anyone up for it?

Definately up for a breakfast run.
Don't know if it's still there, but there used to be an excellent greasy spoon cafe at the westerly end of the Hog's Back.
Okay, it's in a straight line, so boring in fact that I fell asleep once while riding my pushbike along it (woke up on the pavement with my bike on top of me, I was about 15 at the time !) - but excellent to test the cars' turn of speed.
And we might attract along the likes of Orbist and Reformed Biker who live in Hampshire.

That's the first (or fast?) portion of the Devils' Punchbowl route... A3 and then A31..
But Hogsback is not too far from some of the Camberley/Bagshot/Bracknell folks to make it down for a blast, especially if breakfast is involved ;)

OK guys, like the idea of a Breakfast Run, BlueAdept and I did this on the Dorset meet, met at 07.30 and had a nice run down the A272 to Southampton
So who's up for the 26th June??

Right lads, it's seems we have another goer:
A Hampshire/Berkshire/Surrey meet this time.
JSD - perhaps in your capacity as a mod you would like to merge the last few postings on this thread with your own Devil's Punchbowl one which you started. And we'll go with your route. Only point up for discussion really is the date - BigWithey suggested the 26th June but you were planning July at earliest for the D/Punchbowl. I can make the 26th although it's the day after I come back from holiday - or any weekend in July apart from the first one. 8)

I can't make 26th June as I'll be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (hob-nobbing in Corporate Hospitality  ) but might be able to make a Sunday in July some time.

Devil's Punchbowl Meet

Interested, have requested moderators to pull across the back end of the Surrey/Sussex meet 5th June thread, which has some relevant comments and information.

As per Tomks's request..

Can't do the 26th (prior engagement) but well up for a breakfast run.. 05:00 start anyone? ;)
May have to juggle route a little to fit in breakfast at an approriate place/time, and we'll never see druck (as it'll be too early for him to get there having left Gloucestershire at 10:00  )

Devil's Punchbowl Meet

Post by Tomsk » Wed Jun 15, 2005 10:20 am

Let's make it a Sunday in July (but not the first one !) and an 8.00 -8.30 start.
Druck probably owns a time machine, so even leaving at 10am he should be able to make it on time.

I'm okay for 05.00, JSD, but probably too early for most, so Tomsk's approach seems best.

It's here.
Moderator: long URL hidden to stop the page beting excessively wide.

South of Guildford on the A3 and we've a spare bed if needed... and i think a 7.00 - 7.30am start is about right.

A good compromise. (Don't want them to run out of fried bread by the time we get there.) Only question now, is which Sunday ? Perhaps we could have a poll, leaving out the dates that Druck and I can't make it ?
