Wanted: Lower Gear Knob Boot

Post by RickyG512 » Wed May 23, 2018 4:47 pm

Hi All,

When taking apart my knob, using the following instructions (http://www.axialflow.com/ss8_diy.htm) I noticed on step 8's picture that i'm missing the boot from their picture, I've attached the same image to save you going on to the site (highlighted with the red arrow)

I have contacted a breaker and they've said it's missing in theirs too, the instructions in the above link is a US car I'm assuming (axial flow is from the US right?) So am I missing this part or is it not required in UK cars?

I recall someone reporting that their lower seal was missing after the dealer changed the gearbox oil.

They proudly told him that they had refilled the oil from inside the car, until he told them that the seal was missing, at which point they denied touching it.

Loool WTF. Why are there even all these missing seals, are they made out of a rare material or something.

Can the fill plug even be accessed from that area? I actually do need to change my gearbox oil lol

for filling diffs and gearboxes you cant beat one of these plus a length of pipe as the simplest way

defo easier than squeesing the bottle

True but then you have to de-jack the car, let it spill out, and re-jack. That's a lot of jacking lol. If the fill plug can be accessed from their, then you'll be filling on a flat level

Also isn't that bottle a mist types sprayer?

You don't access the filler plug from the top, you remove the gear lever and pour the oil down the hole until it starts to come out the level plug hole on the side of the gear box or simply pour in a measured amount.

Ah now I see, that's actually quite a useful tip! My gear knob is out anyway and it needs an oil change, this tip will save me buying a pump, I can just use my funnel from the top, cheers!
