A Ride in Essex Rotary 2

Post by Will66 » Sat May 30, 2015 12:55 pm

I've been chatting with Aston and Ryan for a while about what they're doing and their cars and stuff. I went over to Snetterton a while ago and grabbed a passenger ride in Essex Rotary 2 (ER2) which is their stripped out N/A Track Car, at the time it had a stock 231 motor of unknown provenance that they had been tuning with their MazdaEdit software. It felt impressively perky, they'd been playing about with AFRs and ignition timing a bit to give it more pep and from the passenger seat it felt quite lively, it has been significantly stripped and runs on 17" rims so it has shorter gearing which will help it feel livelier than stock so I didn't draw too many conclusions.

Last night I had the opportunity to passenger in the car again, a significant development for the car is the new motor, it is significantly ported, Aston was talking about all ports being bridged, intake tracts smoothed etc. It also has a very light flywheel, it was also running a 5 speed box rather than a six speed which would partially negate the shorter gearing of the 17" wheels. The upshot is that in its current, fairly basically tuned state that it felt significantly more lively than any 231 I've been in. This thing went from 6-9000 rpm like no other 6 port I've been in and really hammered through the longer gears, there was more go everywhere, whatever breathing mods have been done it's clearly working and I think there is more power to come. I reckon taking it to the dyno could be very enlightening as I think it's making really good power.

Well worth talking to Aston about a port job if you need a rebuild, could be one hell of a grin!

Thanks Will for the excellent feedback, great to know you felt it was a definite improvement over its previous version.

Oh i forgot to add.... The acceleration was ridiculous. Made me pull all sorts of faces, driving seems extremely mundane for me today after last night.....In short i need to find s**t tonnes of money and phone Aston.

Aye, that it is. :D At the previous North Weald day they brought it along to, I thought it sounded a bit like we were being strafed by a fighter plane as the car went past. :)

Can vouch for the speed and the noise, significantly louder and faster than any of the other cars at North Weald, a beast to be sure.

My car may not be a Superlight as the car still has all of it's seats, carpets, aircon etc. but it has the same engine built by Aston, :thumleft: Oh! and without the Borla, so less noisy. The transformation is nothing short of amazing, as it proved at Spa.
