The JDM car that I've been working on here viewtopic.php?p=1435092#p1435092 is suffering from a bad case of what I call "Clearcoat Bloom" - whiteish patches caused by leaving the car covered by a random collect of tarps, in all weathers.
The roof is most effected, though there is some on the boot lid and bonnet.
Difficult to get a good photo, as it just looks like reflections of the clouds, though very noticeable in some lights.
There's no lifting of the clearcote and it doesn't feel any different when you run your fingers across, so there's no blistering
I have a vague recollection of a discussion of this on a Skoda forum years ago, where the owner was advised to Do Nothing, specifically not to attempt to polish out or cover with any products.
The idea was that the bloom effect was created by water absorbed into the clear coat, and letting the surface breathe, ideally but not necessarily indoors, would allow the difference in absorbed water to equalise and the patches would disappear.
The argument seemed convincing at the time, and I also seem to recall the OP posting back a year or so later, reporting success - at least to the point that he was just about able to see where the edges of the worst patches were but only because he knew where to look.
So, the question is, how does VAG factory paint compare to Japanese, of this era (around 2006), and do we think the same approach might work?
I've seen YT vids etc of people cutting back the clear coat with production paper or coarse compounds, and blowing over with a new layer, only sometimes to have the marks reappear later.
In this case I thinks the owner would definitely opt for the Do Nothing approach, if there was any chance it might work.
Thoughts anyone?
Have any of you had these patches sort themselves out, or take measures to remove them?
What did it involve?
Did it work?

Re: Clearcoat bloom
If that is what I think it is then no you can't easily fix it you must sand it back and repaint. water has got under the clear coat and lifted it.

Re: Clearcoat bloom
I assume apply low heat over an extended period would not assist in making the water absorbed disappear?

Re: Clearcoat bloom
dad did time as a furniture restorer and said they used to fix similar issues to this by pouring meths on it and lighting it. i doubt that would work here but and interesting method for sure.

Re: Clearcoat bloom
We have actual sunshine here today, and the car's parked out in the open, with the roof too hot to leave your hand touching
It'll be interesting to see if there's any noticeable difference later.
