Lightened Rotors

Post by tyler82 » Fri Dec 05, 2014 7:46 pm

I see Racing Beat do some lightened rotors although they are not cheap. I see there have been a few posts about this on the US forum. Makes the engine rev more freely and supposed to reduce wear. Anyone any thoughts on this?

Im not sure what thoughts I could add really. They aren't cheap because they're difficult to machine and balance, but less weight = less inertia and therefore less power needed to move them so they should result in faster revving. I'm not sure they're worth splashing on for a road going car, or for the extra cost of parts you'd need to change them unless you're feeling very flush.

I was thinking of getting these come rebuild time as I want the weight down and faster revving is always good

Ben - very interested in your opinion on this. Can you give a ball park figure of the weight gain you can do? Also any idea on costs?

Looking on here, I don't think anyone has got this done.

:unibrow:

 the trouble with me is everything just takes so long :( but this is in the works right now, will be the new year before we get anything definitive out their though.

As it stands
Lightening
Balancing
Bridgeports
Engine dyno

... Need I say more :thumright:

Oh and perhaps even an RR rolling road?

As for costs it will be muh less than the above mainly because we can use your own assembly rather than buying new :-)

Wow Ben! You are busy!!!

That all sounds great. New Year is fine, I'll let you enjoy your Christmas before pestering you again

So am I right in assuming that a rebuilt engine, street ported/bridge ported and lightened rotors would go like stink?!

I have the BHR flyhweel and am very happy with it. Are lightened rotors safe to use with a lightened flywheel?

There goes my Xmas bonus........

It's $2350+ dollars for 0.4 lbs off the rotating assembly (0.2 lbs for each rotor). If you're chasing tenths on a circuit or thousandths on the strip they might help a bit but on a road car it's a lot of money for a very small gain. RX8 rotors are the lightest you'll find in a 13B motor anyway, I know there are 4 different weights of RX8 rotors, I'd be tempted to see what the difference in weight between the lightest rotor and the heaviest rotor is.
