Potential KRS fit?

Post by warpc0il » Sun Sep 08, 2013 3:13 pm

Just watching F1 from Monza and my thoughts drifted to thinking how you could fit a KRS system to an 8....

So far I'm thinking of a electric motor/generator mounted directly to the back of the gearbox, with a shortened prop shaft.

Batteries mounted just behind the rear seats, either side of the ski-hatch.
This keeps the weight close to the centre of car and short cables.
I wonder if a couple of race batteries from Clive would work if you'd need something specialised for rapid charge and high load.

Motor power controlled by same output from the ECU that disengages the a/c clutch to make full power available, so no manual engagement required.

Generator mode engaged by brake light output and sensor that measures torque on the prop and triggers when wheels are turning engine on the overrun.

Dash display showing KRS mode, battery charge states and temperatures.

Just a thought experiment atm but I can't see any significant job stoppers, other than development budget.

What do you reckon?

That's a cracking thought. I wonder if those batteries would allow that rate of charging, or if you would have to use capacitors instead

What would the extra weight be though? I assume F1 systems are all made from exotic ultralight stuff.

Then an option you'd have would be to power a 'proper' electric supercharger (no, I don't mean one of those computer fan things, but there is a company in the US that makes 'real' electric superchargers) like MazdaSpeed originally experimented with for the '8. :D

It's an interesting one, I think you'd need a big capacitor to make it work for the recharge/discharge times. But it would be fun to have it at full throttle, instant torque boost.

With a lightened flywheel fitted, I'm thinking that the impact "off boost" would be minimal.
