Lol..... Has this thread gone abit 'out of this world'

So, in waiting for any further info on this R3

Has anyone with a s1-2 had there car tuned with either basic mods "exhaust, filter etc" and achieved any real improvements near to whats currently been discussed about this R3

Ps whats different to the s1-2 in regards to the R3 has there been more engine changes, ecu upgrades as this might help point out floors with the s1-2 in the tuning era

Also would it be worthwhile swapping engines with the R3 if theres more to gains to be had???

Hiya Mal

I find your posts quite difficult to read. I was being somewhat skeptical :)

First of all there is only the S1, R3 and Imports

The R3s are technically different in terms of drive train to the S1 cars in the following respects:

Diff (inferior)
Gearbox (inferior)
Engine (extra oil injector)
Airbox (shared)
ECU (different)

The engines are starting to break down 08/09 cars with 60k+ or cars that have been stressed from track work. So little point trying an engine swap.

The ECU in the S1 car has been decrypted meaning it can be modified by someone with either a COBB access port or a dyno and software.

Theres lots of examples of the ECU being remapped by GroupB to give some positive results. A smoother profile and a small increase in peak power.

Your average S1 starts at about 185bhp and goes to 200bhp with a stock air box and free flowing (ie decat) exhaust.

On a TD car you can get some impressive gains on an RX8 NA motor even with mods the gains are modest. Where tuning becomes a necessity rather than a nicety is when people wish to go FI.

It would appear GroupB are claiming to be able to do the same to the R3 ECU and so I will wait and see Rods results as these dont appear to be very conclusive. To do any kind of comparison you need the same dyno in the same mode.

Ok, ive done some checking around as id always though there was a s1 then s2 then r3
S1 series 1 rx8 went to 09
S2 from 09 the s2 is the r3, I cant remember what the info said but the name change to r3 dunno when it happened........ Anyway the differences regarding the 2 are the main thing

R3 is a trim level of the Series 2 RX8, it's just that it was the only trim level imported into Europe.

Hi Danny,

They reckon they can remap the R3 (apparently they have data from a number of R3's, enough to understand it, but they'd not mapped one yet when I spoke with them).

So ... I'm going up there September 1 to see exactly what they can do with remapping. :D

Hear me squeak Mike! :?

Still, someone has to be. #-o It worked extremely well being the 'guinea pig' with the Pettit R3 exhaust.

And if it turns out GroupB can't do it, all they have to do is re flash it back to the original settings.

How hard can it be ....

lol I would be a bit more worried about my new engine on the first of a kind map :)

Fair play to you it can't be more pain than the bridge port experiments

If it makes an r3 tuneable it might change my mind about getting one .. with s1 gearbox, diff and new front bumper :)

You never know ...

And you might not need to worry about changing gearbox (diff I couldn't say about) as since Mazda fixed the problem with that soft material on a part of the early gearboxes, I haven't heard of any issues.

Mine has certainly taken the track stuff in its stride without any problem, and I tend to do relatively long (10 lap plus) stints on track at a time.

I know I would say this, wouldn't I, but I'd definitely change the nose. Ignoring the visuals, which I really like on the M'Z Custom part, the aero really is noticeably different at high speeds. The car feels incredibly solid and planted, and loses speed somewhat better too when you need it to. =D>

From what I've heard and read, if you uprate the sychros on the R3 box then it's a tough bit of kit. Just a shame they had problems early on.

I can testify as to the solidity of the R3 gearbox, mines a mid 08 and its never once given me or the previous owner a spot of bother, the diff on the other hand had to be replaced with a S1(previous owner dd this) all this talk about the front bumper I really don't understand, personally I think the stock front end is great but the S1 owners have diff opinions, don't want to get in to the whole S1 v's R3 thing again so pleeeeease don't hijack the thread people there's a separate thread for that!!

The way prices are going, one would imagine that would be very doable :D

It certainly feels very good with the Pettit / AF short shifter.

Mine's mostly going to be for circuit use but I am going to RWYB with it just to see if I can go properly fast. Quite like to back up a 12 second run.
