Toyo Catback

Post by GlowingBulb »

Need some advice guys; I've replaced my cat recently as it was blocked with a straight-through pipe but it was mated to the standard Mazda cat back exhaust. The exhaust is OK but the tips are getting past their best with corrosion & there's a good rattle coming from inside the back boxes, sounds like some rust or something which rattles & slides around & generally sounds pants.

I know that a Pettit Racing or RRP cat back system would be the best for both quality & refined sound but does anybody on here have a Toyo catback with decat? I'm concerned that they are stupidly loud or are they acceptable to live with for a short while?

Additionally, I believe that Toyo manifolds are pretty good? Using your butt-dyno is there a noticeable improvement in performance?

Thanks for the advice guys!

they are loud... but as for tolerable... how long is a piece of string. what I find fine you may find intolerable and vice versa.

I like a loud exhaust but I had a 200 cell sports cat with no mid pipe silencer and then fitted a toyo catback and it was waaaay too loud

you couldn't hear anything else inside the car under hard acceleration and you had to shout to your passenger to be heard
fitting a mid-pipe silencer to the system post cat and pre-catback made a big difference

So a mid-pipe silencer - is that the difference with the 2 types of catback systems - resonated / silenced or not?

I'm looking at the silenced versions if that makes a difference?

Depends which decat. I've run Toyos with a gutted stock cat and Racing Beat dual res and it was not bad at all. I have also had a Toyo decat with one, which is quite loud. Think that tested at 94db on one track day

Toyo with toyo I think is the shoutiest config possible ha! with resonated midpipes it'll be a bit less in your face, but it's still quite a vibrant and loud exhaust 8)

Nah, I've had a Cobra. That's worse, even with a RB dual res paired with it.

Astons single-exit something, with an unresonated decat could set off car alarms two miles away

Interesting, I was considering Cobra at 1st but it seems there is some issues with their stock levels (according to Demon Tweeks) but after learning that I'll steer clear of them.

To be fair, for the price of a Toyo / Japspeed / Gravity resonated system ~£200 I'll just bite the bullet & see if I can live with it until after Xmas.

RRP or Pettit Racing seem to be the most refined although I'm tempted by HKS just because its HKS & Fast & Furious :D

Racing Beat is the most refined. That's what I'm currently using. I also had a Fujitsubo on a previous car, which was a beautiful and very refined exhaust. It had a built in quarter wave resonator.

Mid pipes can make a huge difference to the sound,

See this video here which compares an equivalent Toyo deCAT to the RRP resonated/muffled DeCAT. not the volume but the tone is alot nicer (subjective I know).

Such a big difference! Totally agree that the RRP solution sounds much more refined, thanks for sharing this.
