Turbo question

Post by Bretteo » Tue Nov 18, 2014 10:16 pm

I know people recommend supercharger over turbos but super chargers don't appeal to me. The question I have for now is what turbo can I put on my PZ with ought doing too much else. So simply, what can it handle stock?

Its a common question. I have had a greddy kit on the shelf for ages but the problem is I know its not going to do the job. Anything less than 300hp you can handle with the stock injectors, gear box etc .. after that its a whole different ball game. The problem is your going to have to develop a solution and it is neither easy or cheap to do

So what would I be looking for to borderline 300bhp? It's my first car so I'm still pretty new to all this, I'm not looking for huge gains instantly, just slowly build up and up

Question 1: do you have £4-5k to spare?

If the answer to question 1 is no then it's not a good idea. Turboing an RX8 is no easy task, it's not an engine designed for a turbo so it takes a lot of work.

We will be carrying out a conversion on our own RX-8 (hopefully early next year, its been a long time coming and lots of delays)
Just to give you an idea of the spec list on our own conversion and what we would advise with a GReddy kit.

GReddy T618z Turbo Kit
GReddy Oil Pan
GReddy Type FV BOV
GReddy Profec OLED Boost Controller
Essex Rotary Turbo Coupler Upgrade Kit
Essex Rotary Turbo Coupler Clamp Kit
Uprated Radiator (Koyo or Mishimoto)
Racing Beat Oil Pressure Regulator
Mishimoto Racing Thermostat
Adaptronioc Plug-In Select ECU for RX-8 with build in MAP sensor
Gauge setup (oil temp,Oil Pressure,Water Temp, Boost) at the monimum
We have also added Exhaust Gas Temp, Fuel Pressure, Wideband AFR Gauge (preferrablu Innovate MTX-L Wideband if your going for the Adaptronic)

Optional Water/Meth Injection Kit we have gone with Snow Performance

I am sure there are other parts we have left out here.

What options are there for seals, I know there's goopy apex seals but what about the side seals?

You will not need to change side seals, just make sure they are sized correctly.

As for Goopy Apex seals, not only are these fitted to our own race car but we are also pleased to say a number of UK engine builders now buy these from from us and if you follow this Youtube link you will see what Goopy Apex seals can withstand, 771 Horse Power !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy the 13B Rotary Power

As the UK Goopy importer they can be bought via this link

So are the standard side seals just a lot stronger than the standard apex seals then or do they just not see as much force?

We would obviously advise Goopy seals, however the above list assumes you have a good engine to start from. We don't honestly feel there are any viable options for side seals other then mazda ones and we do not use non mazda parts in our rebuilds (ither then upgrades like Goopy seals and. racing beat oil upgrades ect) after knowing of failures due to the use of non mazda seals etc.

Side seals are less prone to failure if other factors like broken apex seals are taken out the equation.
It is worth noting that many of the big tuners in Japan don't offer their own side seals but many offer apex seals.

As far a goopy seals go they are in our experience more malleable then the cast Mazda seals this means they are less prone to braking under detonation and failure.

I am going to assume that you will also be recommending a 4-port engine for a turbo build rather than the 6-port? What sort of power do you think is realistically possible from a reliability and heat management perspective with the side exhaust exits of the Renesis?

Why a 4 port over a 6 port?

when you get the Greddy kit it comes with a plate to blank off 2 ports as the turbo cannot flow all the air from the 6 ports,
this goes away when you upgrade the kit as i have done and you can then use the 2 additional ports,

i would not "suggest" that the 4 is better than the 6, just that you will not be using all 6 ports if you have a 231 (to start)

If the turbo couldn't flow enough air for all six ports then it wouldn't make more power than the 231. The usual reason for blanking the APV ports is that the aftermarket management systems sold with the popular turbo kits couldn't control the APV thus it was blanked. Using an adaptronic ECU means you can control the APV on boost gaining power.

The E-Manage could not control the AVP ports this is why they where blanked.
