chewed belts

Post by will_sco »

Ok so I supercharged my 8 with the blitz kit, after 20 miles the belts have gone from good to mangled. Any ideas what caused it?

Also when putting light air pressure through the inlet, turning charger by hand, I can hear air escaping from the rear actuator on the inlet manifold, the one above the injectors, is this normal or a fault thanks

Either catching something or too tight I'd imagine. Have they frayed or split in line with spin direction?

Yeah split in line with spin direction and frayed badly I don't think they're catching but I had them what I thought was tight enough (pretty tight) how do you tell? I usually make sure I can move it about a quarter inch up n down, or loose enough to twist the belt 90 degrees

A damaged belt is often due to mis-alignment. You say belts - which belts exactly are fraying?

The a/c belt and the longer belt that picks up the other pulleys, sc belt was fine. Not the best pic but the was before I removed them and after.

So how are your belts arranged? It looks like you have the standard setup:

Main pulley > tensioner > A/C pump > main pulley
Main pulley > water pump > alternator > main pulley

Plus an extra pulley on the alternator driving the S/C - is that right?

Have you got a pic with all the belts and idlers in place? Also, which belt is that pictured - it looks like there is a good amount of wear on the one edge.

That setup is demanding a lot from the alternator belt - the size of the pulley on the alternator means it is geared up and has a short contact length. Not a problem when you are driving just the alternator, but a S/C in addition must be causing a serious amount of strain

No sorry, I wish I'd taken one but its in bits now. I'm hoping its just misaligned, over tightened, and a bit of extra load, fingers crossed new belts, tightened to half a twist? Will fix it, otherwise I'll be back on. Is there such a thing as uprated belts?

Not that I know of. Are the alternator and S/C unit now mounted on the same bracket? If so I expect this may be misaligned if you are not seeing edge wear on the S/C belt

The scary answer would excessive end-float in the eccentric shaft or the front stationary bearing failing.

Suggest you check and confirm it isn't either before running again.
