Post by Arnie_O » Thu Aug 01, 2013 4:17 am

Well thought I would open up our new section with a simple thread.
I will try to keep it updated.

So simply I would like to know what your running or planning to run on your rotary.
Seems the popular choice is the Greddy kit for turbo's anyway but there are lots if choices out there now

Lets keep it simple, please post the following

At the moment I have a used Greddy kit .. The pipework and intercooler are a bit damaged with one pipe in particular useless

I have the Greddy E-manage ultimate which could be used to map the car successfully.

My 'plan' is to bolt up the existing turbo before either getting the TD06 replaced or upgraded. Then I will go to a different management system most likely the Adaptronics and have the car live mapped by Grahame Martin.

The manifold will be coated by Zircon.

I have got bigger injectors and a BOV. I have an apexi avcr boost controller.

I hope to adapt the AEM (I think this was done on Llyods car).

I have new oil cooler lines, sohn kit so I can run fully synth and a race radiator.

I'm not sure you want to use the e-manage on a 231. I'm sure I read it can't control the extra ports or something?

Yeah you have to use blanking plates it would be better on a 192 but its possible to get off the ground with it but then I would change the management / turbo before spending 1500-2000 on the tuning

Fair enough. This new forum is going to be invaluable in collecting the FI info in one place.

I'm planning to start tinkering with FI next year so hopefully by then it'll be stocked with all sorts of tips etc :)

One thing that I wouldn't be happy about the greddy kit is the turbo used isn't ball bearing so can get wear/heat/lubrication issues and over oiling. If possible an upgrade to a reasonable garrett ball bearing or similar would be my choice gt35?? Or similar.

I'd really love someone like haywards to see this thread and give their opinion on this, would prob stop them being asked the same qs over and over.

By the looks of things could be quite a few fi turbos here next yr :)

I met a guy at Japfest 2 called Peter Cambridge from PCADynamics. He was working for Prodrive and worked on the PZ conversion in 2006. He was very interested in developing performance improvements for the RX8 mainly on the suspension set up, but is involved in the development of a turbo conversion based on the one used in the Mazda Australia rally car. I will be getting more details soon, but it looks like it will be a bit cheaper than the Greddy.
As a side, he has offered to align my suspension post 20mm spacers and set it up on Prodrives track. I offered him my car as a test piece for the new turbo before it goes on general release. I'll keep you posted on any news on the development.

Thats intresting news Mark :)

The greddy turbo is a T618Z (TD06-18G Mitsubishi) that is only oil cooled. I think leaving the car running semi synth in this config is simply going to destroy the turbo as it uses the oil in the sump. You can have this unit stripped and upgraded to add water cooling and a better impeller wheel/thrust bearing. The other option is to go with a garret unit. We have spoken to a number of development companies about the manifold/wastegate/actuator/housing etc I think a GT28X could work well.

As far as I am aware Haywards doesnt have any FI renny engined cars running about? Perhaps I am wrong.

I think they mainly do REW conversions. Haywards don't have a dyno so can not live tune cars so the one stop shop would be WGT but get your wallet ready and have a healthy amount of patience before you hand your car over to Pip.

ahh my bad, I assumed Haywards would have turbo'd something as they're one of the big specialists.

The prodrive stuff sounds v interesting...

It was not a serious offer, but I am interested in a turbo conversion that is tried and tested and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's early days yet and I have very little information so far.

So does that mean going Sohn is a good idea, as then you'd be running fully synth?

According to that you MUST run fully synth

The Sohn is a good idea anyway, but yes a good quality fully synthetic can withstand much higher temperatures without breaking down

i Have that now if you need any pics of what was done let me know,
but to be fair it looks like it has been hacked at,

im not sure the implications of making the kit shorter than stock as we all know the intakes are a pit sensitive, im guessing with it mapped it wont matter too much.

Yeah might take a look at your set up :)

On the greddy instructions theres a massive warning to only use fully synth so yes I have always planned to use sohn

I've found this pic of a set up which might be an idea on how to modify the AEM, ditch the metal piping and go with some kind of reinforced tubing with the aem head where you want it getting cool air. looks like a simple solution?

Erm this isnt fitted with an EAM filter, the end of the hose is using a blitz mesh filter "having a metal mesh exposed to the elements like that is isnt a good idea, these style filters have poor filtration, but have a very high flow due to the metal mesh construction"

Creating a filter heat sheild and vent would decrease be that bit more useful, note the silicone wouldnt offer much thermal insulation on the drawn in air flow.

"also, why not add a vent directly infront of where the vfad would sit & have a filter + housing (heat sheild there) you can easily buy a peace of hard piping ie aluminium adding silicone couplings, have the tubing heat lagged and your there"

Ive a question:-
Ppl seriously thinking about adding a tubby, why is there sooo much chat about staying 'in the box' think outside the box and theres soo many options you could choose

Creating a v-mount setup would add loads of space in the engine bay, all you'd really need is to fabricate brackets and have some pipping made to order. Relocate the battery maybe even the ecu and shift over the engine cool and bottle
