Not sure you're doing top secreting right...

Still I commend your commitment to rotary focused life choices.

It's all fun and games until you send it to Josh to bridgeport and it comes back brapping and farting and sounding glorious and I have to sneak to your place in your sleep so I can steal it. *sigh*

So!

To start off the thread (properly this time, I promise!) - I had been after this car for months. the fella listed it waaaaaay back in August and I was even messaging him back then about it, but he never got around to it or really pushed on with selling it... Life gets in the way some times. But bonus is that perseverance pays off, and hey maybe he just wanted a little christmas bonus for himself with a bunch of money in his bank instead! =D> was finally able to go and see it plus meet him in person last weekend, and is now with me after getting it transported back home :guns:

PXL_20241215_125026256.jpg

A rundown of the car:

2006 Series 1, 231 6-speed. Currently sitting pretty on 92,804 miles - MOT having long expired in February 2021, so over 3 years off the road having a bush grow around it :^o  (which had been trimmed back by the time I went and saw the car lol)

The story goes that he fitted this engine (that he already had as it was installed in an older FB of his that had since been scrapped and the engine stored for the years in the meantime) into his new-to-him RX-8 during covid, so 2020/2021 whilst it still had a valid MOT on it. Plans to be to get it running, driving and back on the road to rip about in as a good little sleeper 3 rotor. Then again, plans are always with the best intentions, and I think it just got put on the back burner, parked and not worked on as an "i'll get around to it one day" car.

Admittedly I have no paperwork on the car or engine or the car/chassis, however from a (admittedly deep) dive of the various forums and websites of the time, I dug up some details about the triple after seeing the HME logo on the front cover. (Gotta love the Wayback Machine! [-o< [-o<)

Hurley (HME) custom 12A triple rotor engine (an 18A if you will), or as they dubbed it at the time, the RX-777 engine.
Hurley Motor Engineering ~ circa 2001 wrote:
As of 2001:

Engine specification & modification :
New tip seals with corner pins and plugs
New bearings
New oil seals - oil pump
New gaskets with stainless steel seal protectors
Side housing reground and lapped for better oil retention and sealing.

ENGINE GUARANTEE
All engines are guaranteed for 12 months, or 12,000 miles provided that the engine has been fitted and maintained to our specifications and serviced by us.
Engines built with new motor housings are guaranteed for 2 years or 24,000 miles

250 BHP RX-777 TRIPLE ROTOR ENGINE CONVERSION
RX-777 specifications :
Triple rotor engine
Triple 1 3/4" HIF SU carburettor
Special HME inlet manifolds
Exhaust manifold and free flow exhaust system
Heavy duty clutch assembly and bearing
Triple rotor distributor
Rev-counter conversion
Drive in / Drive out
Price from £4500.00 Ex. VAT
The RX-777 conversion gives 160 mph performance combined with an economical 24 MPG at 70/80 mph motorway cruising.

And then this screenshot from 2006 with the later edition of the website (which doesn't just show as text) which shows the price in (I assume) USD.

This triple also seems to have a custom garage job carb relocation I assume due to the RX-8's tighter engine bay and chassis rail right in the way, since the originals were mounted low down almost directly on that little flange before the side intake ports, but mine now has 3 big fat tubes moving them way away and up into the engine bay. The exhaust manifold also has to be custom, but they only ever had a photo of a 2-rotor exhaust manifold on their website back then.

So i've got lots of delving in to be doing. The car does turn over, and does start up on brake fluid for a brief while, although fuelling/carbs somewhere seems to be an issue. Haven't started working on it yet either, so my absolute first port of call is to get it compression tested! See what the numbers are [-o< :ninja:

So this is going to be an entirely new world of pain trying to figure out these old carbs, only ever dealt with ECU controlled/fuel injected cars

Wow this is wilder than I could have imagined. A lot to process. I had no idea that Hurley were building engines like that 20 years ago. Good luck reviving it.

Jonny Woods has experience with 12A motors with carbs and distributor, as he has built, at least one, 12A-powered RX8, just for sh*t-n-giggles.

Feel free to throw my name into the conversation, if you contact him.

Nope. Coincidentally Colum at Garage Reg posted about having an upcoming 20B for sale shortly before you posted this thread, but wasn't expecting you to be biting his arm off for the 19k asking price. Part of me was thinking you we going to get a custom e-shaft and centre plate shipped in and build your own with all your spare engine parts.

Amusingly I did see that post from Colum - but they're all so spenny! You're definitely right at me not wanting to drop £20k on just the engine :P

Now I can't act like a 3-rotor is at all cheap in terms of fabricating parts for, or anything really relating to them.... Everything's custom lol but yeah as far as initial costs go, it's probably the cheapest way in I've managed to find.

Now I've got all my fingers and toes crossed that it'll be salvageable... Even if that does mean sending it for a rebuild and proper refresh (at a good expense), downside is that good 12A parts are now getting rather few and far between so hopefully there's not been many miles on them and the main bits are serviceable!

Has anyone actually successfully made a 3 rotor renesis? Because I guess the 13B/REW/MSP are all the same dimensions so in theory??? :-k :-k  (I only really have MSP engine parts spare lol) minus the lack of the fat irons having exhaust ports

None that I know of, but as you say all 13Bs are basically the same size. The exhaust ports are the issue that I can see being the problem. I gather Racing Beat made one for the Furai, but other than that there probably isn't much interest to do a Renesis, when there is more support for the Rew and it's a stronger block.

Fair enough, this is true. When it's a tried and tested method using the REW/20B parts, why bother to forge a new path using MSP when they have more potential issues/pitfalls to the peripheral exhausts and it'll be a lot more leg work and pain....

Will hopefully soon see how much of a bumpy ride I'm in for with this new project :beers: :beers: :sign:

It would be pointless and silly to spend such a big amount of money to make a 3 rotor and use renesis parts which are far more inferior than the REW ones.

Looks like a interesting project

I'm assuming for MOT emissions purposes its allowed to be tested under the engine age ? So 1986 I think ?
I wouldn't worry unduly about sorting the carbs out. it'll be a case of stripping each one down, cleaning it all, checking floats are still floaty and all the valves and jets are free and clear.also ensure the dashpot moves freely as it all looks a bit corroded

They are a HS4 carb as used on the austin rover metro and montegos
generally a good carb and needs very little setting up providing the needle is already correct for the engine

I'm intrigued about the ignition system ? As that looks like a Ford EDIS coil pack so presumably there's some kind of control module to kick that into life
and naturally all the traction, dash electronics and CAN on the rexi will be having kittens about the lack of ECU

Unsure about emissions, although I would like to hope so since it's been engine swapped with an earlier design... Although that's a hurdle to come to later down the line if I can get it all sorted! :D

I had a quick look into the SU carbs that are available - mostly as it's literally my first exposure to a carbed system. From my searches I think it comes up as an SU HIF44, as it's got a larger flat mating face with more holes on the top side and larger intake at 1.75" as opposed to a HIF 4 @ 1.5" from what I can google about them at least. The throttle/choke levers are a little stiff to rotate, although the throttle slide I think it is? (that first bit inside it with the straight line down it) pops up smoothly to show the insides of it all, that's about all i've played with so far - definitely need to research more before I dig and start playing or removing/stripping them down.

As for ignition, there was a spare ignition coil in the boot, which is marked as a BERU 0040 100 372... :-k  assuming that is interchangeable with what's under the bonnet (albeit aftermarket of whatever variety).

Indeed, all of everything ECU related is properly throwing a hissy fit  although it's not the RX-8 steering rack that's installed, supposedly it's been modified to take a hydraulic MX-5 rack, from which generation i'm not sure.

I still need to get the thing compression tested (whilst cold for now as I haven't played enough to get it running properly) to see what the crack is inside the engine and if it's somewhat good news, going to pull the fuel fuse, yoink the electrical plug out of the ignition coil give it a whirl... Assuming that would stop it injecting! :^o only ever had to comp test a renesis with all these lovely helpful ECU aids to cut injection   nice and simple aren't they! :P

carbs 'inject' all the time

if there's vacuum and fuel in the carb (unlikely after all this time) then there will be fuel drawn into the engine

however I'd bet those float bowls are dry and dusty and all probably clogged with stale fuel so until its all cleaned off and wet with fuel its unlikely to start
