Harry's Project Banana!

Post by HarSc »

Well, as some of you may know - i've gone and got myself a banana RX-8! :yeah: :beers:

Today was the day of the pickup so nipped down to Stafford to sort a few bits out beforehand, and the transporter brought it back up! Got my work cut out for me over winter, it's in need of a full interior, side skirts repairing and fitting, odd bits of fettling here and there, bonnet thread repairs on the driver's hinge, plus a full exhaust including manifold, an OMP and a very good service as it's been sitting =D>

All in all though, hopefully a very solid base for a long-term banana keeper! [-o< it's not getting scrapped by anyone if I can help it at all! It'll get the love it deserves \:D/ :inlove:

Currently on my list of parts (that I may or may not have already bought in preparation for it :paranoid:) is a compbrake BBK, Pettit catback, different carbon bonnet (which I may or may not fit depending on repairs and how it looks), a PZ or R3 spoiler (still to choose hah!), new set of tein S lowering springs to replace an old set of the same on the car and some wheeeeels =D>

So this'll be the thread for it, and while I may not do much to the car immediately, over the winter i'll be chipping away

Previously owned and listed over on MRC here by cib24 back in 2015. Hopefully I can do the car justice and bring it back to it's former glory! =D>

Blimey! that's quite a difference in condition over those years .
But good luck, it will be a Cracker once finished.
I have a pz spoiler,in the unlikely event you haven't got one already.

Yeah, it's had some changes, bodykit fitted and has had a little knock on the front passenger corner. Will need some attention to get it back to 100% but I reckon it's doable! =D> ahah I appreciate the offer - i've already got both a PZ and R3 spoiler sitting in the sidelines, just got to choose which first :P

Cib24 was also a member of the OC at that time as well - although I'm sure you know that already Mr MemSec lol.

Excited to see how this turns out 😁

Sad to see the state of the car now :(

Cib24 (Roy) spent no end of time and money keeping that car smart, clean and running well, back in the day.

I did several trackdays in 2014 and 2015 when Roy took that car along too. It handled well.

Be good to see it back up and running again, well done Harry =D>

It being mucky probably makes it seem worse than it is :^o but yeah, it's been stripped back and isn't it's complete pristine self as it once was when Roy owned it! Will have to clean it and see how much better it looks ;) :P

---

I've seen all the fuel receipts, work receipts - everything meticulously recorded, including handwritten premix/miles/mpg figures on the back of each of them! Credit to his ownership honestly - and recorded coatings of waxoyl to the underneath and arches in 2013 & 2014 to the underside has definitely kept it fresh until he sold it in '15. It's the cleanest S1 i've seen or come across in my (admittedly short) time around RX-8's, so 100% worth getting it back to it's former glory!

It was written off as a Cat N in 2020 unfortunately, but just seeing the clean metal underneath immediately makes it worth caring for, as i'm sure anyone else will agree!

I'll be doing my own rounds of injections into the sills and all cavities I can get my hands on plus liberally spraying the underside along with cleaning or re-painting where needed, as the chassis needs to stay as clean as it is! =D> i'll end up putting all the photos up here as I properly delve into it.

While I can say the car won't be going back to stock - it'll be keeping the Mazdaspeed style bumpers and accents it has on currently, i'll try my best to make it nice! 8) using the good ol' phrase of OEM+ and whatnot

So, getting this kicked off with a busy saturday getting started on the nana. (ok, ok - I couldn't help myself, it was just there on the drive begging me )

First things first, revealing all the damage properly so I can have a go at making it a little better than it currently is. It'll never be perfect unless it's replaced - the wing itself has folded up and plenty of dings/undulations around the headlight, but the general shape is ok-ish. Paint isn't really broken apart from one point on the headlight edge near the front.

So it's damaged a bit, but it's a case of "how far do I go?". For now, the damage isn't all that severe when buttoned up and together as a complete car. If I were to find a good wing to replace it with, it would need paintwork to match the yellow, but then you can't really put a good wing onto the bad underneath really, so it'd soon spiral into getting a body shop to do it properly with a chassis cut (which I will take the front end from the black donor next to it anyway!), painting underneath and above. I'm not ruling this out for future and would quite like to honestly, but for now the main focus is getting it all up and running and enjoy the car for a bit first and make sure all is ok. Priorities and all that ;) :p

My first foray into panel beating went decent, it's made a better job than how it was, I used the black wing from the donor to get the correct shape to where the undamaged wing would fit (or near enough so that the current wing will still fit), and went ham with a hammer and an assortment of wooden blocks both as backstops to push it back flat against and as blunt force bashing devices  it's removed all the nasty nasty creases, and re-formed it back to it's original shape (mostly), although will still be out of line somewhat i'm sure.

The passenger oil cooler and bracket have deformed, but I was planning to use those from the donor regardless since they've had guards on from being very young! They're spotless, plus not bent is another benefit

All in all it's lining up ok for saying it's a fibreglass front bumper and a damaged wing, still needs the undertrays on to support the bumper and make it meet the wheel arch a bit better, but that will come once i'm finishing it off. Few shots of the underside to go with it too, lovely and clean. It's the cleanest cross member in the engine bay i've seen on an 8 so far, my R3 included! barely a spot of rust!

Also got the OMP fitted, removed the existing RB manifold as that's not staying with me - not part of the sale so it'll be returning back, spotted the engine mounts were TPS refurb units done in late 2020, so that's always a bonus! =D> still plenty to crack on with and do, but i'm starting \:D/

I recently acquired a set of body work dollies and hammers which you are welcome to borrow. Hold the steel blocks behind those creases and tapping the top with a narrow hammer should make them much less obvious.
Drop me a PM if you are interested , postal cost only involved.

I appreciate the offer Chris. I think i'll leave it as is for now as it's done what I wanted it to do. I may well re-visit it in future, but i'm happy so far with the panel gaps, so the underneath can stay as is ;) I feel like if I keep trying i'll just want to replace the whole thing properly  next up I will crack on with the exhaust, coolant and oil systems next to try and get it in a state where I can give it a startup! \:D/

It's not so bad because the R3 isn't around at the moment, so just these two on the drive for now =D>

They're brill though, very understanding :yeah: \:D/ I do make sure they're all ok with me filling the place up with 8's. if anything needs to be moved or be out the way etc I make sure it's done asap - last thing I want to do is annoy everyone, and likewise with the neighbours as I'm on good terms with most of the nearest lot [-o< usually end up having a chat in passing when I'm outside tinkering

Actually so excited to get this one running... Can't wait aahhh :shaking2:

Oh 100%. Lucky to have the amount of space that we do, basically have parking for 4 cars opposite the house! neither 8 can use that space though, in the short term for the lack of wheels on them so they can't move, and longer term for the fact they're SORN so wont move :^o

It's the little things. Haven't actually done anything to the car yet since last time, but I have done some shopping! :^o

eBay had a 20% off deal on selected sellers, so I thought i'd treat myself and get some fresh numberplates (which were needed anyway as I didn't have the old set) and a new yellow stitch gear gaiter =D> woop!

Obviously! ;) I mean, all the things it's missing are on the car that's next to it, so it's not so bad, promise! :P

just gotta stick it all together. Might have to do the whole restoration thing where the badge goes on last, but in this case it's the numberplates

Re: Harry's GL04 MXU Project Banana!

A mate "restored" an MGB a few years ago and I swear by the time he'd finished the only original bits remaining were the numberplates!

It had rotted so bad he ended-up buying a new body shell, then the engine, transmission, interior, wheels, glass, suspension, brakes, wheels, lights, brightwork,.... but he swears it's still the original car, just restored.

I made a comment about "Trigger's broom" but he still didn't get it, even after I explained the reference #-o
