Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
Afternoon all!
Myself and a few mates are participating in the TBR700 banger rally this April/May: https://www.twoballbangerrally.co.uk/th ... rally.html
We have chosen CPSL Mind as the charity to support so any donations/social media shares would be greatly appreciated: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tbr700rally
Onto the car itself ...
I have been looking around for a good month or so now but hadn't found much (£1000 isn't a great deal these days)
That's until I saw the following come up on a search of eBay Sunday evening: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134429038236
I quickly dropped Nick a message and picked it up yesterday. A hassle free experience which isn't always the case when buying cars.
It needs to in the region of 1500-2000 miles on the same engine which should be interesting despite the low compression the starts aren't too bad - it is a bit smokey more than anything (guessing the oil control rings/cat have seen better days).
The plans for it are as follows:
- Fit some new seat switches (three drivers of very different heights so it'll be a pain otherwise) - we already have some from from Gordon's donor RX-8.
- Check the fault codes - Nick has let me know that there is an O2 sensor fault so I'll check this out with anything else - he has kindly given me a used spare to put on.
Bleed the brakes - the pedal is a bit long and spongey and whilst doing this I'll get some new rear pads fitted beforehand (MOT advisory).
Fit an R3 starter motor - I have one en route from Nuttys which should hopefully give a little extra leighway for a further drop in compression (current starter cranks at circa 250rpm).
Change the engine oil and filter (goes without saying).
Change the gearbox oil - synchros are ok which is a surprise at the mileage (123k - makes me think it may have been done before) but there is some bearing noise in 2nd, 4th and 6th. I don't expect it to help much but it'll get some metal out of the gearbox at least
Already done:
Coolant light was on - sensor now unplugged and light cleared
I drove the car back from Cookham back to Northampton and it drives well other than the slightly iffy brakes. It has made me realise how much better PZ suspension is over standard suspension though.
I plan to break the car once the rally is done so let me know if there's anything you'd be interested in.
Cheers.

Hmmm i may be interested in the car when your done. This could be a nice little charity project ourselves to do similar in work for the younger lads. Will run past them and see. Or the motorsport club here may want something to play with

Re: Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
It's a tough one - obviously it's a limited edition but it's high mileage for RX-8 standards, the engine is on its last legs, the gearbox isn't great and it has a reasonable amount of rust and lacquer peel on the body. If I sold the interior and mirrors I'd be halfway to getting my money back straightaway

Re: Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
I don't suppose anyone has a fairly cheap set of spark plugs they'd be willing to sell? We'd like to take a spare set on the trip.

I have a reserve set of new silicone coolant hoses which you can have on loan basis.
Plus a water pump, alternator and a standard set of coils and leads which you can have for free.
Just the packing and logistics to sort for getting them to you.
Oh and a gazillion fuses and relays too!

Re: Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
Has that evolve ever been owned in the NE of England?
Reg looks familiar and test drove one that colour before buying mine.
(test drive didnt go well: back street garage, asked if it was mid life crisis car, then stalled on uphill slip road and wouldn't restart - think it was out of fuel)

I don't believe so - I'm only the fourth owner and the paperwork I've had is all from down south. I'll have another check thoughbigpete8 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 10:36 amHas that evolve ever been owned in the NE of England?

So, took a little drive from Northampton to Olney today and no real issues hot starts a little long but not too diabolical (yet). Any ideas r.e. poor radio signal? It is absolute ass and just about works on Radio 1.

Re: Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
The aerial cable from the head unit has a plug in connection in the passenger footwell found behind the trim panel on the left side.
If you disconnect it there and push in a length of wire you may be able to improve the reception and confirm it’s an aerial issue as opposed to a head unit connection issue.

Re: Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
Managed to get a couple of bits done today:
- Engine oil and filter (the Laser oil filter tool is a saviour - even with that I had to use a massive bar to get it off )
- Changed the starter motor - turns out it had an R3 one already got this one cranking around 270rpm by cleaning the 12 V stud on the starter. Guessing it may be worth a new battery too as I tried another one and it was getting up to 275rpm. Assume Varta E23 is the best bet for VFM? I have the N72 on the PZ but they have gone up loads recently.

Do you fancy doing a deal on the R3 starter or are you keeping it as a spare?

Re: Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
We will keep it as a spare for the journey - I may do after though (depending if I want it for the PZ).ChrisHolmes wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 7:21 pmDo you fancy doing a deal on the R3 starter or are you keeping it as a spare?

Re: Mazda RX-8 Evolve Banger Rally project
We are now there or thereabouts for the journey. Yesterday included:
- Replacing this 'interesting' solution for the washer bottle cap
- Cleaning the MAF sensor - but it was already pretty clean
- Replace the rear brake pads with some £17.99 Mintex specials - I think the last ones were really used up ...
(Gaffa tape plaster to cover nasty cut close to the bone )
Bled the brakes as the pedal was really spongey and long - a bit of an improvement but still not great. Hoping they improve a little bit as the rear pads bed in.
Changed the gearbox oil due to bearing noise in 2nd, 4th and 6th. Going by the drain plug I don't think it was a bad idea ...
Finally took if for a nice little drive - good weather for it yesterday.
Now onto the final small jobs like sorting stickers, fixing the radio signal issue, getting some seat switches fitted, putting a better battery in and changing the cheapo ignition leads.
