Dan's RX-8 PZ 'National Rust'

Post by rx8hunter »

I suppose it's about time I made this post as I've owned my PZ for over seven months now 😁. Regular attendees of the Northants/Beds/Bucks meet will know me by now otherwise you may have seen my PZ on the timeline at Combe a couple of weeks back:
PXL_20220709_081520998.jpg
To start off the compression results when I bought the car (not setting any records that's for sure 😂 - but not too bad for a 98k original engine and £1800!)

Front rotor:

5.6
5.6
5.3

Rear rotor:

5.2
5.4
5.2

Some people may recognise this car from the club before, let me know if so and the story behind it (I've found some old forum posts)

It's fair to stay my spannering skills have significantly improved during my ownership so far 😂 the following has been done already:

Oil (Castrol Magnatec semi synthetic 10W40)
Oil filter (Crosland Halfords special)
Air filter (K&N panel)
Transmission oil (Comma of the correct grade)
Diff oil (Motul of the correct grade)
Spark plugs (the usual NGK affair)
Cabin filter (Febi)
Brake fluid (DOT 4)
Genuine new to my PZ mats
Xenon number plate bulbs (Halfords)
Offside rear drop link (Febi)
Polished headlights (Aldi do everything)
Replacement footrest (mine was missing for whatever reason)
Power steering issue resolved (Forscan reset)
Xenon sidelight bulbs fitted (Halfords)
Front and rear brake pads (Mintex)
Nearside oil cooler lines replaced (OEM)
Hitachi ignition coils (possibly a controversial choice 😉 - rev b coils fitted previously)
Magnecor ignition leads (replaced NGK leads)
Rebuilt OSF brake caliper
Handbrake gaiter
Gear gaiter
Varta N72 EFB battery
AC regas
Shimmed SSV
Magnetti Marelli tailgate gas struts
Tailgate wiring repaired rather than taped 😂
Drivers side carpet repaired
Leather seats DIY refurbed
Re-glued the boot seal

Not to forget all of the little jobs like the wheel arches being fitted properly, replacing broken trims, replacing the dead interior bulbs in the glovebox and ash tray and all the other cosmetic bits (a lot to mention, probably easier to ask 😁)

Finally the last picture taken - one from a local meet near Daventry last Saturday:

Finally got a couple of little jobs done yesterday after living a life of chaos recently:

Pretty strange to have such a rusty seatbelt rail! Just Mazda things :) does anyone have any suggestions to try and prevent this dashpad from cracking? I've not really needed to use anything like it until now.

Cracked dashes have been reported for a long time in the US, and it's only inevitable that climate change would present that issue in (some parts of) the UK

Some US guys believe that various "vinyl protection" products work, if not too late, while others say that the only prevention is to keep the dash in the shade. If the car's parked outside then a shaped section of cardboard box seems to be favourite (or is that "favorite"?)

Hi Dan, your car is getting a bit of attention on Facebook as we have it as our new cover photo.

Are you guys on Facebook so I can tag you?

I believe it used to belong to Ashley Keen, who sadly passed away. His Sister Sammy was asking about it.

The PZ is officially SORN for the next few months as of today 😢 I figured it would be best to save a bit on tax as I won't really use it other than monthly meets and I want to keep it off the salted roads really. However, I did have the Krown treatment done on it yesterday - I'd definitely recommend it for value for money when you consider the time involved. A few pics for those interested - a small hole was found in the OS inner sill but otherwise it's not too bad at all other than the crusty rear arches 🙂

Looks good.

Where did you have it done and how much?

I would normally be SORNing my R3 around now but I’m having to use it as my daily because my Smart needs a new fuel tank.

Post by rx8hunter »

So, the re-commissioning of the PZ started today :D it has been nice being able to drive the Evolve here and there but it's just not quite as sharp on the country roads and the PZ catback brings out the engine note a bit better.

First thing was getting it started and it sounded a bit like this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/NsZMFg5ZjWc

Not sure why it decided to crank so slowly as the battery is OK - anyway, it did start. However - with an engine light and stability light ...

Checked the codes in Forscan and found the following:

P2109 - Throttle / Pedal Position A Minimum Stop Performance
C2778 - Sensor Power Supply Failure (cleared OK so I guess this is where the battery has got a little low at some point)

Found a few threads on here for the P2109 code and a PCM reset sorted it :D (the throttle span was taking the engine between 2krpm up to around 3krpm).

However, I did notice the idle was going from smooth to then having a hesitation every 5-10 seconds (I've not had anything like this with the Evolve) - however it had been like it with the PZ since owning it.

Back to Forscan again and the MAF value at idle was varying between 5.63 g/s and 6.23 g/s so I thought I'd try cleaning the MAF ...

Once cleaned the readings were between 5.49 g/s and 5.73 g/s and the hesitations have now disappeared :D I should really have checked it sooner

I also noticed the quick release negative battery terminal had loose screws in both the small and large cables so something to keep an eye on ...

I'll be heading over to dads in it in a few weeks time to remove the catback, get it welded up then MOT time :thumleft:

It may be worth a roadtrip and polite ask to someone like Rob or James (Goodeggbob or Qwakers)

They deal with this kind of thing and I know Rob has a ramp that he has done many repairs including 79398 (79398). The issue is now getting it somewhere with a failed MOT

These are often subjective decisions by testers rather than objective when deciding the extent of corrosion. Those areas are of a substantial heavy construction and even if flaking of the surface has occurred it is likely that the structural strength is not substantially weakened. I would get under neath the car and have a good pole and scrape at the areas mentioned.
The testers are not allowed to poke hard and chip/scrape areas. A second opinion pre, now post, MOT check is certainly worth carrying out.

Building on what Chris has said, and he may know better if this would work, (as long as you dont poke a hole in while cleaning and checking) could you take a good array of wire brushes, scrapers, sanders etc at it. Remove all the flaking bad areas and smooth it out then paint is with smooth black underseal to get it through a different MOT inspector? Knowing obviously that you do need to carry out rectification work soon but could at least make it road legal to get to people like I mentioned above or other bodyshops. I suppose the brake line may be an issue? Never done then myself but is it able to be swapped from the evolve? Or is it a quick enough job at a garage to make/cut/splice the affected area to get back on road?

Brake lines are relatively simple to do having recently done mine on the Mazda 2 (still haven't made a post about that! :^o). The rear lines on the 8, ususally it's only the very very end of it that corrodes, where the plastic covering is not there to allow for the joint to the Flexi line (assuming that'll be where yours is gone too). Anyone replacing that should just be able to make a section with the 180 bend included. I recently made the section but haven't fitted it yet, any garage who's done brake lines before should be able to make it and fit it in an hour or two, and do a quick bleed of the brakes and be on your way 8) (brake line in the photo is very corroded )

The rear brake pipe union will most likely be fused to the pipe and twist it off necessitating the hard pipe cutting back and then extending or dependent on condition reshaping and it will still reach the flexi union. A new flexi is likely to be required. HARRYS POST APPEARED AS I TYPED MINE
Any newly under sealed sections will attract attention at a retest, especially as they are previous failure points therefore any such areas must be clearly sound or show quality repair features.

From what I was told there was a hole in the front around 10 inches long (so not insignificant). The rear they weren't entirely sure how bad it was without taking covers off (fair enough).

As for the brake line it is exactly how Harry described - not too worried about that for now.

Then the handbrake as it wasn't mentioned - I was surprised as it feels ok but in fairness when I checked it there is very little free travel in it (looks pretty straightforward to sort that though).

If you can get the car over to me I'll give you a hand repairing it, I'm in Woodford Halse.

Hang on! You had the car treated at Krown in October last year so how could a 10” hole suddenly appear and significantly structure weakening corrosion have occurred since then.
All the more reason for a second opinion.

sounds like the jacking point may have crumbled when the car was lifted up, a big hole like that is hard to argue with not much room for interpretation

any photos ?
