Luke's 231 Resto Project GP53 LTJ

Post by Luke0611 »

Picked up this 53 plate 231 yesterday; about to roll onto 100,000 miles!
-93igsa.jpg
It has been used as a drift car over the past few years, being trailered to and from events. As such, it's come with a welded diff, steering lock angle kit, coilovers, Mintex discs & pads all around and a full Toyo/Japspeed exhaust system from the manifold back (LOUD), and some other bits that I'm probably forgetting right now.
The underside seems remarkably clean, having advisories for rust several years ago that weren't present on more recent MOT's.
The engine certainly seems to be in good health; I was told it had been rebuilt, but had no receipts to prove it. That said, car starts on a dime, hot or cold, and pulls really well all the way to redline. I will be getting a compression test done tomorrow, so I'll soon know for sure.
20210909_222019.jpg
The goal with this project is to turn the car back to more or less standard, keeping whatever I need for my MSR340th or selling on some of the goodies, spray it back to its former glory, and then decide whether I keep it or sell it on.

Fair play to you for taking it on.
By the time you have it sorted you would have fallen in love and it will turn into a keeper.

So, the results are in and I left the bloody sheet in the car and forgot to take a picture.
Basically, it's averaging 6.0 on all faces across both rotors, pretty damn good! We also found that the starter motor was cranking at a whopping 390rpm.
20210911_191326.png
The paintwork isn't nearly as bad as it seemed. Looks like whoever rattlecanned the thing black didn't bother to prep at all, so paint thinners has been working a treat to get it all off, even on the wheels. It's almost all red again!

Part of me is considering continuing to use the car for its built purpose, drifting, and being rid of my track Mini. I could still take the MSR340 on track, though it is my daily; I don't see that changing. I'm at a bit of a crossroads with this, currently.

The exact results of the compression test. The rear rotor is seeing quite a bit of variation between the faces, but overall a decent outcome.

20210917_191351.jpg

Did some polishing today. The red comes up lovely, mostly, and gives me a clear view of what actually needs attention. The wheels have definitely seen better days, but I'll be taking this car to at least one drift day, so they can stay that way for the time being.

Car is now on the road while my other one is off. Hopefully having to drive it around will motivate me to work on it too.
I've discovered that the coilovers on it are utter ****, will be replacing with a standard set at some point.

The rear bumper and driver's rear quarter have been painted. The colour match isn't great, as you'd expect from Velocity Red. The front and rear quarters have had holes drilled into them for universal arch flares, so the rears certainly needed filling. As for the fronts, does anyone know how much I should expect to pay for a pair of (red) good condition front wings? I want to avoid painting wherever possible.

Picked up a tidier bonnet, without holes in it, as well as a standard intake from Mr. Shipman over the weekend.
Also picked up a much better looking front bumper for cheap, again without holes, which will save me a lot of time filling and painting the current one.

Once the bumper and air box is fitted this weekend, next on the agenda will be an oil change and getting a second-hand LSD fitted in place of the welded one.

It has now developed a binding calliper on the front right. Add that to the list of things to do this weekend.
The list:
-Clean and polish the new bonnet
-Change the front bumper for the better one
-Change the brake calliper
-Change the WeaponR "cold" air intake for a standard box
-Adjust the front coilovers so that they don't bottom out on every single minor bump in the road

Binding calliper seems to have been sorted with a good dose of WD40, but I have a spare anyway should it go wrong again.
All four tyres have been replaced with some budgets (I'm sorry) after discovering a bulge in the front-left. I'd expected to have had to change the rears because drift car, but was a little disappointed to have needed the fronts as well.
Front bumper has been replaced for a nicer one, albeit without headlight washers. The car looks so much better for it. I discovered that the plate holder is screwed in from behind the grill after the fact. #-o
IMG_20211114_171709_513.jpg
The new bonnet cleaned up very nicely, a couple of dings, but certainly better than having huge holes everywhere. Polished the headlights while I was at it.
The WeaponR remains in place, as I was missing the tube that connects the intake to the throttle body.
Lastly, the cheapo coilovers remain disgustingly low and crashy because I'd forgotten to get my adjusting wrenches out of the R3-40. #-o Makes for a good picture though, even if the fitment is gross

Isn’t that a 192 bumper with no headlamp washers? Could be an MOT failure!

True unless, you have a tester who knows that the RX8 231 has Xenon lights for which headlight washers are mandatory. I am not preaching just posting to make you aware. The bumper will on the inside have the outline of the hole for washer mechanisms should you wish to fit your old ones.

Ahh. To be honest I wasn't aware that they were mandatory for xenons. Perhaps I'll switch the old bumper back on for the MOT; I need to screw the plate holder in anyway.

After doing some digging on the headlight washer issue, I've found that headlight washers are not inspected on cars first used before September 2009. Unless I'm missing some fine print here, I don't think this will be a problem.
Could anyone confirm or deny?

Around 3 or 4 years ago, I unplumbed the head light washer because of my sohn.I
Failed the mot because they weren't working, explained what I'd done, response was to remove the whole lot to pass, hence why I still have the hole exposed!
But as someone mentioned, I have a mazdaspeed bumper, which obviously doesn't have washer gets, so short you should be fine. Image

Swapped out the WeaponR hot air intake for the standard box. Also adjusted the coilovers to be higher at the front... which made the bottoming out issue even worse! I'm refraining from driving the car until I get my hands on a set of standard suspension (the MOT is due today anyways.)
I've picked up both driver's side doors and yet another bonnet, all of which are without dents or scratches, that came as a bundle with the front bumper all for £50 from a breaker.

Started a deal between a friend and myself; I do paintwork for him, he does mechanical work for me, which suits me perfect as my experience in that department is sorely lacking.
Painted his E46's bonnet over the weekend, which turned out beautifully. He has a couple of other parts that need doing as well. In exchange, he's already fitted my Mini's new radiator and replaced the faulty fan relays and will be fitting the 8 a non-welded diff once I come across one. He's asked me to find more jobs I need doing

A sh*t 24 hours to say the least.
Following on from the Mini's engine blowing on track yesterday, the 8 has rolled into a colleague's Audi S5 and destroyed his passenger side wing. Almost no damage to the 8, bar the side light bracket snapping and a bit of paint that needs touching in.
Taken the day off work because I am truly at my limit.

I now have no roadworthy cars out of the 3 that I own.

I heard stories, I think it was from Hayward's, of an engine that registered zero compression on one rotor.

When they stripped in down there was a plug of debris blocking the hole between the camber and the sparkplug port, while everything else was fine.

I recall saying at the time that must have been one hell of a blockage.

Anyway, with a Renesis you have the option of repeating the compression test using the other plug port (leading/trailing)

Just don't do what one dealer did and remove both leading and trailing plugs for the compression test, as that's another sure way to get a zero reading #-o [-X

Despite being able to do the work that his car needs doing and him even agreeing to let me do it earlier in the day, the kid is pushing for it to get done by another garage. They want £1800 to do a job that would cost me £300 max. I don't see any way out other than talking to him, but he's very difficult to talk to, and unbelievably unreasonable.

May be best to go through insurance then as it will be less hassle and potentially cheaper for you. You do have protected NCB I presume.

Unable to protect NCB until 25 with most companies I believe, so goodbye to my 4 years, hello massive premium hike.

The car passed its MOT with only an advisory for the nearside wheel bearing having a bit of play. That will have to wait; I'm going to be SORNing the car until winter passes, because I have no more patience (or money) left.

Try n have a resonable chat with the fella stating even though the claim against you is non fault on his behalf and he may have protected ncb etc etc.. but the fact he is making a claim against you his renawal premuim will go up regardless. Hopefully he sees sense.

It might be too late for that, if he's already informed his ins co.

These days companies raise the premium if you've "sustained a loss" even if you choose not to claim.

Insurance is a racket.
