RX54 My 231

Post by RXTaitt » Mon Sep 07, 2020 9:27 pm

Hello,

I thought I would start a thread on my car so that I have somewhere to share updates etc. and just keep a record of what I have done to the car.

So I bought my car back in 2017 as a second car after getting myself obsessed with them an all things rotary. I won the car on Ebay and payed the mighty some of £800 for it. I had done my research and read all the info in the forum but my budget at the time only stretched to £1000 max. So I looked around locally and bid on a the odd car that came up etc until I ended up with my car. Below is a picture of the car not long after I bought it (with the front plate moved as I think the car looks better without it in the middle of the grill). :thumright:
IMG_20180915_081309.jpg
Now although I read all the advice my budget would only go so far so I knew the car wasn't going to be perfect but on first inspection it looked okay and seemed to run fine so I went for it! The car had approx 85k on the clock, the original engine and some history including some maintenance at Hayward Rotary. The body seemed okay considering what I had read and the owner seemed enthusiastic about the does and don'ts of the RX8.

My plan when buying a car was that, due to my budget, if I could get something reasonable that ran I could then see how I liked the car and if in the long run a rebuild was something I was willing to commit to. :-k

I drove the car for the first year completely stock just to see what it was like, how it drove and set my base expectations of the car. Once I got used to the car (and where the torque band was or wasn't) I loved it! :D
IMG_20190506_120101.jpg
After that the car was garaged for what must have been a year and a half. In that time I fitted a knock off Toyo back box, Pipercross air filter, Tein lowing springs, general service items, painted the wheels, new gear knob, Polished the headlights/third brake light, some rust prevention and general tinkering etc.

The car is now back on the road and I finally go to take it out for a drive the other day! The car needs a clean I know......

Hopefully I haven't bored you all to death and I'm impressed if you made it this far through my rambling.

There is always more to do with the car and the work will continue to be posted on this thread.

No chance of that, good to see an owner working on a budget and still keeping the thing going, people still read my mini novellas of posts on my thread for some reason!

Look forward to future updates. I forget if you've mentioned anywhere if you've had a compression test? If you haven't, would be worth doing for future peace of mind and to give you an idea of how far away that looming rebuild is.

I do like winning blue and the white wheels go well with it.

I have thought about getting a compression test done and it's definitely on the cards. I think RX Motors was the closest place to me so I might take It there in the next few months. Hopefully there is still some life in it for a little while at least!

RX are great, they only charge £40/60 IIRC (can't remember which) and they'll give you a steer on what needs doing. Worth a visit purely to see the Aladdin's cave!

So I made a late night ebay purchase and bought what I affectionately call a "Show Hook"
IMG_20200923_135537.jpg
But for just over a tenner I'm not too upset that I probably couldn't be towed with it. #-o
IMG_20200923_135629.jpg
I did mange to get out for a drive today though! Up next is plugs and leads and when I can I'd like to get some RRP coils!

Yeah, definitely don't use it. First time I used mine to tow a fellow member's stranded car it lasted for about 200m before this happened!

There is a weak point created by the sharp reduction in diameter, just asking for a fracture :(

And when it lets go, you've got a nasty piece of metal flying around at high velocity on the end of the tow rope

I did have my suspicions that would be the outcome if ever used. I did wonder If that threaded extension was steel if it would hold up or just move the issue to another part of it. :-k

Managed to get a small bit of time today for a small job. Uses some back to black on the exhaust surround as they were starting to look pretty faded. I think it will need a few coats to really bring them back but not to bad for a quick job! :thumright:

As they were:

I used the last of a spare rattlecan of black hammerite spray paint I had knocking around on mine on a whim, one coat and they were well nice. Still are!

That's not a bad idea, I did think about paint but I wasn't sure how it would come out. Was it a gloss of matt paint that you used?

Glad it's still looking good though. I'm not sure how this stuff will hold up but I'll keep the thread updated.

Getting paint to stick after using plastic "treatments" can be a pain
